UTH Problems?

I have Exo Terra Het Wave UTHs under all of my enclosures and it seems that the warm sides are too warm normally ranging between upper 80s all the way up to 100 degrees F when the thermometer is sitting directly in the middle of the heater and also depending upon the weather, sometimes we have the windows open when it is nice and the AC is not on. Is this not too hot, and if so what should I do? I have vents on both ends of my enclosures along with a stainless steel screen top for air circulation and for my 10 gallons I have metal screen tops. The house temp right now is around 78 degrees. We just turned off the AC. The cool side is just fine in all, so any suggestions. The UTHs are specific to the sizes of each enclosure, they are just getting to warm in my opinion.

Without something to regulate the temperature, your UTHs will just continue to rise in temperature until they reach their max wattage. You need to get a thermostat that can cut power to the UTHs when the temperature rises above a set degree. Your enclosures should be about 85f degrees on the warm side.

If you're on a budget and want an extremely cheap thermostat, a lot of people use a Zoomed 500r.

It's not really that great, but it's better than a rheostat, and definitely better than nothing.

For a really good thermostat with mid-range pricing, you should try a Ranco model or a Johnson.

I myself use that Ranco, but I bought it cheaper off of Ebay and wired it myself, which is very easy to do.

For the high-end, you can't do better than a Helix or a Herpstat.

Herpstat is about the best you can get, but it's pricey. If you have a lot of enclosures though, it's worth it. At the very least, I'd recommend the Ranco.

Good luck :)
