If i have an under tank heater, and the natural light in my room (i have a pretty big window) than i dont need any extra light or OV light aboe the viv, right? The guy at the [et store told me i should use a UV light and then this other light to put on for 12 hours above the Viv, but i read that you dont need any extra lighting if you have a UTH

am i right?
 
As long as your temperatures are ok then you should have no need for any extra lighting, corns being nocturnal have no need for extra lighting or UV. Whats the temp like under the UTH? this is whats important not actual light levels. The tmp should be around the high 80's- low 90's degress fahrenheit mark. Also you might want to look into a thermostat for your UTH,but i havent got one so....
Just one more thing you mentioned a large window, you might want to keep your tank/viv out of direct sunlight, to avoid overheating.

right now i just put the thermostat in (im getting the snake in a couple of hours and i just set up the Viv) so i cant tell the tempurture yet.

Also, real quick, what should the humidity be...i read that its supposed to be around 40-50% percent
 
I bump it to 50% or so when they are about to shed, but 40% is fine. And for what it's worth, corns are not nocturnal, they are considered diurnal or crespuscular depending upon where you read. Coming out at dawn and dusk. They have the round pupils of a diurnal snake, not slitted like nocturnal ones.
 
Like i just put the substrate, UTH and everything in about a half an hour ago, but the Temp and Humidity gauges havnt changed at all. But, i can feel the difference when i put my hand in there.

How long does it usually take?

sorry if seem...well...paranoid-ish. But i want to wait until everythings right before i go to get my snake
 
The humidity gauge should change immediately. You might want to spray some water in there to make sure it's working. My digital therometer changes pretty fast if I move it around inside, so I would think that it also should be warming up.

I just got home wihth my snake!! im soo happy!! he's adorable!!!

anyways...backl to hum,idity. It's been a couple of hurs and the humidity gauge still says 70%. I dont know if its just cause its not working. Also, its humid outside since its raining, could that have something to do with it?
 
You need a thermometer with a probe under the substrate right over the center of the UTH so you can monitor the hottest spot the snake can reach. The thermostat probe should go there too. If you are using a thermometer without a probe thats on the glass then it only measures ambient air temp wgicg isnt very useful.
 
Kiki92 dont worry about sounding paranoid, it sounds like your first snake, and everyones the same at first! :)
The reason your guages havent changed may be because the UTH hasnt fully heated up yet (depending on how long you left it before taking the temp after installing it). What did the hygrometer/thermometer read, out of interest? Please keep us updated on your wee beast and maybe post some pics?
 
the humidity says 70% which i now isnt right.

what cn i do to make it go down...or maybe itsjust broken or something...i dunno


but yea he's my first...his name is Hoshi...he's so cute! he's about 7 inches long and is a snoe, i think. i'll post some pictures once he gets settled in :)
 
Unfortunately im not a good guy to ask about humidity as mine is also far to high at the moment too around 70% also. It is important to try and get on top of humidity problems though as they can eventually lead to respiratory infections.
What type of hygrometer have you got? Mine is an exo-terra little circular thing, not too expensive and im doubting its reliability, and im sure now i should have gone digital!
To lower humidity you can try a few things:-

1. Move the water bowl to the cool side of the tank
2. Is there anyway to increase ventilation in your tank?
3. Remove any live plants you may have (not too sure about this one! hehe)
 
Just thought of a couple of other things, try moving your tank away from any external walls in your house (walls that are directly on the outside) or if nothing else works then try different locations in your house/room.
 
Umm...i think i have the same kind of hydrometer that you have

the water is on the cool side, theres no live plants either. Hmm...i dunno what else to do. Right now he's hiding under the substrate getting used to his new home ^_^
 
i wouldnt worry about it for now. Just leave him be for a few days if hes a new arrival.
Lowering humidity is a hard problem, and as i say i havent managed to sort mine out either

Humidity could be affected by the substrate being used I use Terra bark in my display tanks and find if I don't let it sit to dry before use the humidity will be high from the internal moister of the bark.
 
I use Aspen..which i dont think would make the humidity higher

Im pretty sure its just because its humid outside right now
 
I think your snake will be fine. Just keep an eye on the levels, seeing that it goes down with the outside readings. They live through the rain in the wild.
Just don't leave them on any thing damp a long period of time.
