The uth on my 20 long stopped working. I have a spare one but it's for a 30gallon. I figured if I set it at the farthest end of the tank, there would be plenty of room for a cool side. I just can't see spending $30.00 when I have an unopened one here. Any thoughts?
 
Yup, just fine. I actually have a really large one between two 20L tanks that are end to end, and with the thermostat it works just perfectly.

Check the UTH by itself without the thermostat, if it gets really hot it may be the thermostat that isn't working.
