uth question

Hi all.

I have a question about the uth. Okay, I am having a rheostat and digital thermometer shipped to me this week. I am getting some aspen too. Now back to my qestion.... should I lay some thing over the uth so when my corn borrows he will not burn himself? I will have a rheostat, so I don't know if I will need to lay anything down sience I can control the temps. I will be trying to keep the warn side at 85. So.. do I need to lay anything down under the apen and over the uth?

Thank you.

Nope... with the rheo & Therm you should be fine..
Just put a nice layer of aspen in ready to go..

Are you laying the UTH directly in the bottom or are you attaching it underneath the tank? I was a little confused and wanted to make sure you know that it goes on outside, attached to the bottom. :)

Or attach it to a heat resistant panel, I use a placemat cut to fit my UTH on one tank and a piece of plexiglass from Home Depot for the other. Then I elevate my tank just a couple of inches off the ground to slide it under.

That way if you want to move it, or use it for a different tank, you can. You have a little bit more flexibility.

Well, thank you guys.

With the temp on the hot side kept at 85 all the time, do I need to even put a peice of paper towel down on the bottom on his cage? Will he burn him self?

I have another question.... Where do I put the digital thermometer to? Do I put in under all the aspen on top of the uth?

LOL, yes Ice, I know where to put the uth. This is not my first time with reptiles... :)

Thanks you guys.

Put the probe for the digital thermometer on the glass above the middle of the UTH.

Using a rheostat, you are going to need to monitor it as the rheostat adjusts the wattage and does not adjust for the air temperature. So if it is a really hot day the warm side of your tank will be a bit higher and so on.

I have a rheostat and a thermostat. I like the thermostat a lot more - I use a bread tie to keep it right next to a digital thermometer probe and put them but under the tank on the middle of the UTH.

The rheostat, on the other hand, is way too hot even turned all the way down. On the very lowest I can get it the uth comes up over 90 degrees.

Well, thank you Coty.

So are you saying that I should not get a rheostat? What should I buy, a thermostat?
What is the diffirence between them aanyways? I am buying my rheostat from fosterandsmith.com.

Please cheak it out and get back to me. Thank you.

Okay good. I really didn't mean to offend, but I read your post and was slightly concerned so I felt, even though I may have grasped your words wrong, that it was best to say something. :D

As for the rheostat. I have one and I'm really not impressed with it. We have to constantly moniter the temp and often adjust to keep it in the right range. Before I get my other two snakes I'll be getting an actual thermostat. Someone suggested I get a Ranco thermostat, so I'll be looking into that myself. I'll try to dig up some info for you about it. ;)

If you're using the UTH inside the tank/viv, then you need to cover it to stop poop getting on it. I use a layer ceramic wall tiles laid over the top of the UTH, then cover these with the substrate.

If you get liquid on the place where the power cable goes into the mat, then this could cause an electrical short - carries the risk or electrocution for snakie or even a fire.

Ice- please do try to get some infomation up about the roco thermostat soon. I am getting my corn very soon, and I will need to order it by today or tomorrow..... :)

Bitsy- like I said before, the uth is on the under side of the tank. It's not inside of the tank, but under the glass part.

Thank again,

Emma.

One thing to keep in mind too, is that some people won't use heat during the summer months. If you aren't 100% sure about your uth staying within a safe range you should be ok until it gets cooler out (it has been in the mid to high 70s in my "non-quarantine" room).

I have 2 tanks set up and I actually turned the one with the rheostat off because the temperature on the warm side of the viv kept changing with the air temperature and I could not keep up with it.

This is the thermostat that I use:

It is about 20 bucks plus shipping. You can get more accurate ones that cost more, where you can more accurately set the temperature. The one I linked works well for me without a lot of monitoring or adjusting - it has 2 outlets for heating devices so you can regulate 2 tanks with it as long as they are both the same kind of heating device (like they are both made for a 10-20 g tank, and you aren't using one UTH made for a 55 g tank and one made for a 40-55 g tank).

I found this site too, it may be the one Ice was referring to:

Thank you Coty,

I am ordering now from reptilesupply. I am going to get the ReptiTemp 500R by Zoo Med. I am also going to get a digital thermometer from reptilesupply. The total will only be around $35, which is great.

Thank you all for the help!

Q: What is the difference between a rheostat and a thermostat?
A: A rheostat is basically a dimmer. It allows you to manually reduce the amount of power reaching a heater. A thermostat like the 500R senses the temperature and turns the heater on and off accordingly.
