vanilla > bi-odor?

well i have a pair of rats now (my feeding costs just quadrupled so i'm breeding my own) and my mom has started to complain about the smell, i can't smell a thing unless i'm right over them and they're right next to my computer, where i practicly live lol but what ever i guess.

anyway i heard vanilla extract worcks really well does anyone have any imput? is it better then the redicululsly expensive Bi-odor?

and just because i felt like sharing here they are M1(black, normal coat) and F1(champagan, rex coat)

I did use vanilla extract for my mice at first. I just put a few drops in their bedding. They just marked more, and it ended up stinking worse. Then again mice stink A LOT more them rats. Rats have a faintly musky smell. You may want to go out to petco/petsmart and pick up some ferret bi-oder.

I think most people who use vanilla, put it in their water, not the bedding.

The Vanilla extract goes in the water and it does help. I've noticed a big difference in my rats and mice. And lilyorchid, it doesn't go in the bedding, it goes in the water. I know a lot of people complane about stinky mice. Try the Vanilla Extract and cleaning out the cage every week. But also another good piece of advice. Don't clean the wheel or hides, or food bowls and what not. because if they have to rescent that. Thats were all your problems are going to lie. So just change out the bedding and litter every week and you'll be fine.

They don't drink the water if I put it in there. Someone told me to do that, so I did and they didn't touch the water bottle. Also my mice get cleaned out every 4 days, minus their wheel and hides. They don't smell right after I clean out their tanks, but within two-three hours they stink again.

Lilyorchid. Maybe your problem is that your putting in to much vanilla extract. you only need a drop or two depending on the size of the water bottle. My mice only get a drop and one of them get 2 because of the bottle size. and once you put in the vanilla you shake the bottle to mix it up. Try just leaving the bottle in there and they might take it.
