Venting about frozen mice

Brizzle

Craziness
Okay, I'm just venting a little.
I know I have to respect my housemates and all, but isn't it annoying not being able to keep a few frozen mice at a time in the freezer? I don't know about other people, but I hate buying mice one at a time for my snakes. My housemates find it disgusting if I keep frozen mice in the freezer. I miss having my own place, and doing little things like this my own way. I honestly don't think it's disgusting at all. All the mice are in closed packages and it's not like it touches anyones food.
When I first moved in here, I had put the frozen mice in the freezer. A little bit later all of a sudden I hear this "YUCK!" from the kitchen. That's when I was asked not to keep them in the freezer anymore.
I just hate buying them weekly because my roommates can't get over a few little dead mice in closed packages in the freezer. Don't they realize they keep dead animals in there either way?
Ugh, it's just very irritating.

I'm sorry! That absolutely sucks.

Personally, I'd just put them in an old food box and label it with your name. They shouldn't have any reason to open your food, so they'd never go in there. :D

Okay, probably not the best idea, but I just think people are really dumb sometimes. My roommate insisted that the "food" is in an opaque container, but other than that - no problems.

My roommate and I have separate drawers in the freezer because of the mice. That's not much of a bother since I'd anyway prefer separate drawers as I can never remember if this bag of fries or those nuggets over there are mine. Mine is overflowing with mice of all sorts. First she felt somewhat uncomfortable about them, but now she happily eats at the table with my snakes ;p (The snakes obviously eat in boxes, but still.) I'm so proud of her

She did start to see the mice in plastic bags differently when I pointed out that next to the mice in exactly similar bags were my chicken files and minced meat. Food's food, even if it's whole. xD

Ask your roommates if they'd be okay with the mice if you put them in old plastic ice cream boxes or something?

Another option is to purchase a small fridge/freezer and keep it in your room. You'll have a place for your frozen mice as well as secret snacks for yourself and can use the top as an extra table for another snake.

If anyone ever questions why Susan is a moderator...just read the above post.

I vacuum seal all of my mice in lots of 5 to 10 mice per bag (for freshness) and then place the vacuum sealed bags in a Rubbermaid container (for courtesy). The container is also labeled “MICE”.

Heck, I think I take better care of my snake food than I do my own food.

Regards,
Steve

Yeah when my mom came over and I was pulling some salmon steaks out of the freezer she kind of made a few comments about the mice packages on the door. I just shrugged and told her they were in plastic. My house, my rules. :) Although buying an extra freezer is a very, very good idea.

I agree with getting a seperate freezer. It might be a little pricey, but it should help out if you can buy the mice in a large number. My parents told me there was no way in heck that I was keeping mine in the freezer in the house, luckily we have a fridge out in the garage too. I keep my mice wrapped in a paper bag out there. They are all packaged in plastic bags as well. We dont really keep food out there. Just fish or birds that my brother caught or hunted.

Yeah, my own little freezer would be good.
I have a little fridge that I keep worms and stuff in..And that's upstairs. I wish that fridge had a freezer.
I've heard a "yuck" from that fridge too. That's where I keep all my beardies food.

Isn't it amazing that these same people probably have no problem with ground up cows in there :shrugs:

My roommate and I have an arrangement: she gets the bottom third of the freezer for her meat-type things, in case any blood decides to drip. I get the top third for my vegetarian-type things (and my mousecicles, which don't bother me at all until they're thawed). The middle third we quite happily share for other necessaries (i.e., gin, vodka, ice). But I almost had a freakout when her girlfriend unwittingly put frozen dog food on *my* shelf. Then the hypocrisy of it dawned on me, so I relented. But still. I put in a few days of huffing around the apartment for the fun of it. Then we raided the middle third of the freezer, and all is well with the world.

Yep.

One day one of my roommates finally saw me feeding my snakes(I usually try to do it to where they don't really see) and said "Oh, that doesn't look too bad. I thought you have to cut up the mice to feed the snakes".
I laughed when she said that to me. But after seeing how I feed them and how it's not that bad, she's starting to want one of her own. Maybe if she finally gets one..She'll get over the mice in the freezer.
But then I have to work on my other 2 housemates..
I have 4 housemates..1 wouldn't care if I had frozen mice in the freezer..But the other 3..Big nope.
2 of my housemates who barely speak English(from Poland) didn't even know I had snakes(I keep them all in my room). When they did, they asked what I fed them. Then they asked to make sure I don't keep them in the freezer.

Well, meat for human consumption is cleaned and dressed while mice are frozen with the entire contents of their stomaches and all other internal organs and waste, so it's not quite the same as a piece of beef.

That said, I personally have no problem with keeping frozen feeder rodents in the freezer with human food, as long as they are sealed in plastic.

My roommate was jumping on me for ordering 50 sml pinks "i dont want the freezer over run by mice." When he got home from school he saw the box and dry ice. He yelled at me to get the mice out of the freezer that he told me he didnt want it over run by dead mice. I told him if you can find them i will take them out. He spent like 20min. trying to find them. It was with my food in a rubbermade container not very big and hidden, i had to show it to him. He threw a fit and asked my hub why he didnt have a problem with it and went to his room. lol

I've seen some stuff for sale in the stores that you won't find in my freezer...sweetbreads, brains, pig's feet, ox tail and my all-time favorite...chicken feet!

My mom's only term for me keeping mice in the freezer was if she didn't have to see them. So I bought them their own special sterilite shoebox and spray-painted it entirely black. Problem solved! It's my own special "black-box" with hidden secrets inside XD

I'm so glad I live alone. I mean, they're frozen for crying out loud. I could see people wanting them sealed in a container, but throwing a fit because they're in there at all? I think dog food smells absolutely nasty, but wouldn't it be unreasonable for me not to allow dog food to be stored? At least the mice don't smell.

I just keep mine in the plastic bag I buy them in. :p
