I let my fretting get the better of my judgement and yesterday when I bought a bag of frozen pinkies, I also bought a live one. This morning, I tried the small paper bag trick after he initially refured to eat. I also used a little teasing technique... as I put Vern in the bag, I said, "So you call yourself a carnivoire?" and "Your momma eats Romaine!". I think that's what did the trick. When I finished mowing the lawn, after 8 hours of being in the paper bag, I looked inside and found a lumpy snake.

I know that I might have just set myself up for a battle of wills getting him to take f/t. But now I KNOW exactly what and when he ate. I don't have to take the word of the girl at Petco that he ate there "a few days" before I bought him. To me, that's worth giving him a live pinky and having to sweet talk him into f/t.

Now I'll leave him totally alone to digest his meal till at least Wednesday, other than to invade his space to change his water.

Thanks to everyone who's offered advice and put up with my neurosis. :rolleyes:

Congrats!!! Glad he ate for you.

This was my first year breeding corns and I had a little trouble getting them to eat. I tried giving them live and two of them ate. Now I have them on f/t. Heres what I did...I took the f/t baby pinky and put it up to the face of the baby. I knocked the mouse around until the snake grabbed it. Then after it grabbed it I let them hang off of my hand and they slowly ate it.

Now every week I first put the pink in with them for a few hours and I have on of the two now eating on its own!

Wow. You're a bit more gutsy than myself.
But congrats. Getting new snakes to feed can be frustrating.
 
Congrats on the feed! I think your right that it might be harder to get him on f/t, but at the same time feeding live once or twice can't hurt too bad. I'm sure he's very happy with him nurtitional jump-start. :cool:

Paper bag was the very small, kid's school lunch bag... not big at all. Pinky and snake in bag (a dozen small holed previously poked in), bag folded and taped closed then placed inside his viv, and viv secured as usual. No guts required. :cool:

It's amazing what they can eat? As soon as you think he is ready and is eating good, try watching him eat. It's really cool and I'm sure you'll be in awe as he slowly eats this pinkie that looks WAAAAY to big for him. You should have seen my face as I watched mine eat for the first time, I'm sure it was priceless. Good job getting him to eat!! I'm sure that things will go better now.

Haven't seen Vern eat yet, but I have watched a previous snake eat. "No way that is gonna fit through there" said I. "Like backwards childbirth," said my sage spouse. :sidestep:

Congrats on the feeding. Slicing/braining the f/t may be a good incentive for Merlin to scarf it down.

Nothing offends Merlin, and Vern can't read. :cheers:

As for the taunting, desperate times called for desperate measures. I'll speak kindly about his lineage next time.
 
As best I can tell, Vern hasn't left his hide since he ate on Sunday. Peeking in with a flashlight shows that he has been moving around in there at least.

Since this meal represented about 20% of his total body weight (1g pinky in a 5g snake), I thought I would let Vern dictate when his next feeding will be by seeing when he ventures back out to try to plot his escape. Good idea, or should I attempt to keep him on a 5-6 day feeding schedule?
