Very Active Corn?¿

Sorry i love my upside down ?'s lol
But i got a question since im still new to Corns.
My Snow corn usually hides under the water bowl (i don't know why there when i made other places to hide) and what not but for the past 2 weeks every time i look at her she is out and very active... any reason to this behavior?

:wavey: Could be her personality & the fact that she's comfortable exploring her home...along w/their love of squeezing into tight spaces. I have 2 myself & they both have different habits w/regard to visability. Slither, the older one, used to hide all the time & still prefers to snuggle in the substrate & peek out on occasion. One of her fav spots has always been under her pool (btw, she's under there right now). For the longest time when I first brought her home, most people thought I had an empty viv because ya couldn't see her at all. She's gotten a bit better at being seen but moreso at night. Squiggle, however, is out & about at all hours of the day & night. She's a very busy little girl. Guess she never read the book & doesn't know that she's nocturnal.
I doubt that her being out & about is a bad thing. I would have to say enjoy watching your new baby. In time, she probably will come to love the hiding spots that you made for her. I'm wondering how upset Slither will be when I remove her way, too small cocohut to replace it w/the half flower pot that I have for her. She's grown out of her cocohut, literally. :uhoh:
How long have you had her?

I agree that it could just be her personality.

To be on the safe side I would double check all my temps to make sure she is not trying to escape something that is too hot. Check the surface of the heater to make sure there are no blazing hot spots. Also make sure she has a few good hide choice that are sized correctly for her.

Truly it's probably a personality/comfort level thing. All three of mine are different. I have a hider, a peeker, and a roamer.

Oh and given the time of year and if she is old enough she might be looking for a mate. Although I think that behavior is seen more in males.

I'd go with checking the temperatures, personally. Hides only under the water bowl - it's probably the coolest spot in the viv.

ive had her for 3 month s now. the temp in the viv is around 78. The heat pad is not blazing hot. I have a regular watt light above the viv so that she is visible during the day, but it doesnt put off to much heat, plus its not directly on top of the viv.

When my UTH is running at 85 degrees, my aspen substrate above it is 76 degrees or so. How are you regulating the UTH?

Also, what's your room temp?

room temp is 74 degrees. set by a plug in heater in the room.. The UTH doesnt have a regulator. just has a plug in. but i did check it and its not blazing hot. i put my hand on the bottom of the viv to feel.

my zoo med sticker thing on the viv.

I'd lay money on heating issues here. The air temperature will be no indication that the heatmat isn't too hot. Unregulated mats can easily reach 90. Your hand is not a thermometer. Can you get a digital thermometer with probe? I think you'll be surprised at how hot the mat is.

well she sits on the side with the mat so i did not think that was the problem. Im unemployed the state gives me 70 bucks a week so im not sure bout getting a digital. I Mean the tank is 40 gallons. i dont think its really that hot. the UTH is not that big. took it from my old 10 gallon one till i save enough for a new.

If you put your hand on the UTH and it feels warm, then it's going to be too hot for the snake. We run at over 90 degrees and their safe maximum temperature range is 85-90 degrees.

The UTH should feel lukewarm or barely warm to you. If it feels warm or hot, then it's too hot for the snake and could be the root cause of the problem.

If the snake doesn't feel secure or safe on the cool side, then it will go to the side where it does, sometimes irrespective of whether the temperatures are dangerously hot.

Try moving the hides/cover from the warm to the cool side of the tank and see if she follows them.

These can be wrong by 10 degrees either way - my nephew has one for his Corn that says 75 degrees, even when my digital thermometer (which I take round to check) says 85.

Also, you're measuring the air temp above the UTH and not on the floor where the snake is. As a basic indicator, take it off the side of the tank and lay it on the floor immediately above the UTH. Watch how high it goes. It won't be accurate, but it will give you an idea of how much trouble you might be in there.

Thanks for the good reply. I have good hides on both sides, i think she just rather be out all the time. She find the fish very interesting to watch as well. And the UTH feels just warm to me. I really dont think it has anything to do with that since that is something i check daily.

I really do think you should check the temperatures properly for the sake of your corn. They don't generally choose to spend their time watching goldfish instead of acting normally.

i turned it off during the day to see if she acted any different and she still did the same stuff. now she is curled up under the water bowl but im sure when the light shuts off she will be out then for most the day she will be out and moving still.

she is gettin fed today. she is around 3 years old. not sure if the owner before me ever bred her. only got her bout 3 months ago.

:D You could get a small therm/hygro combo at Walmart I believe for rather cheap...under $10. They're digital made by Springfield. I also keep one of these in the entrance of her warm hidey along w/the probe one in the back. It is a good idea to have something to take the temp down where they are at. I'm pretty sure that the ones w/the probe are also under $10 at Petco or Petsmart...like maybe $8.00. Some type of digital therm is definately a necessity. One would do ya until you could get another one...just move it from one side to the other.
:eatpointe Oh yeah, Squiggle just loves to cruise around even more the closer it gets to feeding day!
