Very angry snake....

For the first time ever, we had trouble feeding Dex. He didn't want to go into his feeding box, and when anyone tried to unwrap him from Jon's arm he took a nip at them. He's sitting tightly on Jon's wrist, he won't move and is breathing heavily. He's not shedding, his last shed was 3 weeks ago and was clean. He's healthy from what we can see and nothing was changed in his tank or at home.

Any ideas?

Apart from being nervous due to a shed which you've discounted already, my first thought would be high temperatures. What are they like on the floor of the tank at the warm and cool ends? (With a digital thermometer).

And bear in mind that he isn't "angry" - he's scared for some reason. Is there another pet nearby which he might be able to see or smell? If he's taken out while he thinks there's a predator around, that could result in a fear response. He does seem determined to stay in the safe place which is your other half's wrist, which points to him feeling threatened. When you went to get him out of the tank, was he asleep or buried?

He might also be really hungry. If I manage to pick up a snake that is in super feeding mode, it stops trying to bite the hand that is holding it, but constricts that hand really tightly, and strikes at anything else that moves, namely the other hand!

What ended up happening with your little guy? Did you feed?

Don't try feeding him too many times in a row, or you'll stress him out and make him even less likely to eat.

If he won't eat on the 2nd attempt (this one), then you should wait until his next normal feeding date before you try again.

As he refused food then it does sound like he was either overheating or spooked. If he refuses again today, I'd also leave him for a few days before trying again. With any luck it was just a one-off.
