Corn Snake Friendly
I was looking through some websites and this person had this pic on their home page, they also sell corn snakes and i feel really sick to my stomach now after seeing this...i just found it very disturbing...i guess its cuz im a corn snake lover....

I guess if I were the objective, rational person I think I should be, this wouldn't disturb me. But it does. I realize that a snake's life is really no more significant in the big scheme than a rodent's, but I'm very biased. That was a beautiful corn too. I guess I can rationally wonder why you'd waste the time and money raising a corn to that size only to use it as a feeder. That meal is way over-sized for that king anyway. I just hope both beautiful snakes didn't die as a result of the stunt. :(

I agree; its not nessicarily the act itself which bothers me, but the irresponsibility about it.

I see many good things in this pic

A: good reason not to house snakes together
B: kings do naturally feed on other snakes
C: this is what happens in nature

carefull to overreact
we don't know the whole story
that corn could have easily been sick, or otherwise would have been euthanized

The thing is this person had this posted on their Home Page of the website!! Thats what bothered me the most, if the corn snake was sick why would you feed it to a healthy kingsnake....also the corn snake looks way too big for that king IMO..im not trying to overreact just thought it was not right to post on a home page...thats all...

plus there was not explaination of why this king snake was eating the corn snake so im sure it was not a accident...i know its natural for kings to eat other snakes...

Taken out of context, I agree, it could be a "shock value" method of showing the dangers of cohabitation.
--But--
Anyone feeding a sick snake to a healthy one deserves exactly what they get. :shrugs:

Well im not trying to start anything, that wasnt my point, i just found the pic upseting and wanted to share my feelings. Hope that wasnt wrong of me :shrugs:

I checked the sight. What a jerk. Yeah I said it. He has a fancy site and a lot of snakes - his goal to SELL his overpriiced snakes to SNAKE LOVERS then he puts in a picture like that. What an idiot.

opps sorry wish i could EDIT its actually raysreptilia.com
I've read enough bad things about Ray's Reptilia on the Fauna B.O.I. to keep me from ever being a customer. That photo only reinforces the bad impression.

I've heard some pretty negative things about that person as well - especially about his shipping.
I agree the pic is kind of tasteless for a home page even if it is a fact of nature that kings can & do eat corns. Still you know there's people out there that will think 'cool, I'm getting a king snake' when they see that pic. Some people like to watch their snake kill things, sad but true.

The eyes on the corn look like it's already dead, and other than being too big, it doesn't bother me too much. Actually while researching info on my kings, I came across a site where the guy brought home DOR (roadkill) to feed his giant adult Cali King. He had pics of it eating rattlers, corns, racers, lizards, small animals and birds. I found it interesting how much of it he's found and brought home. I'm a little germ phobic so couldn't do it myself, but it would be interesting to see one of my kings eat another snake. Oh, and you can't tell me that breeders on here don't feed deformed or unwanted corns to their kings.

Does it bother me? A little.

Is it natural? Sure.

Does it belong on a webpage without a blurb describing whats going on at the very least? Heck no. Its in very poor taste.

Personally, it looks as though the corn is already dead. The eyes are fully dilated as far as the picture shows. And that's what I hope is going on. From what I've witnessed personally, a cornsnake that size would have been wrapped around the king in several places even after being half down the hatch, and I'm just not seeing it. All I see is the king gripping the corn.

Either that or a very forceful attempt at making Jungles. Which is just one more reason I don't agree with them.

And Roy summed it up exactly for me; I've heard several horror stories about animals people have purchased from him and read enough bad news on the BOI about him to avoid ever being a customer of his. Nice webpages don't always equal a responsible person, sad to say.

While I've really no reason to talk about the picture, as I've fed cornsnake hatchlings to my kingsnakes and taken pics. They're in a place not accessible to the public unless I give the link out to people wanting to see.

I took them as documentation of how awe inspiring it is to see kingsnakes actually eat another snake. Its not something you see everyday, nor would I want to necessarily.

It's just a fact of life I believe in. I do not want to perpetuate bad feeding corns, when there are plenty of great feeding ones out there. I refuse to force feed, and if a snake can't manage to eat on its own, then the kingsnake has a meal, simple as that.

But that's why I have my kings, to eat deformed or non-feeding corns. To me, its responsibility as a corn breeder.
