Viv up and running

22 is not enough snakes
Since I still have 2 weeks before my snake comes home with me, I set up the viv tonight to get temperature and humidity issues looked at while I still have time to make adjustments without hurting anyone. I have the heat mat on a ceramic tile underneath, and the tank itself is propped up about half an inch or so. So am I missing anything here? I do want to get one more hide on the cool side (the left). That bright piece of aquarium "furniture" is just there as a place holder so I could see how crowded it'll be. The two thermometers in the front aren't going to stay there, and the hygrometer is in the back.

I just set the heater up tonight, but over the last few days, temps have stayed pretty much around 76 (again, without any kind of heat source) and humidity around 50% but there's no water in the bowl yet either so it could go up.

My roommate just moved out today so it's been busy around here. Once I get everything back to normal I'm going to start messing around with the everything to see how the temps/humidity act.

Anything I should add, change, or take out?

How big is the viv? Hard to tell by the pic. Looks good, but I'd suggest more hides (and smaller ones... tighter fits). A paper towel roll or two will likely be his favorite hides... and they're free! lol (plants are good too)

76is fine on the low, 83-ish on the high.

PS. I see you're using nylon utility straps! I use them too. *thumbs up to that*

That's a 10g for now...and yes, the utility straps along with my homemade lid seem to be doing okay so far....this may be considered cruel, but last weekend when I was home building the lid, my dad was worried about the top not being secure. I went upstairs for a few minutes and when I came back down, he was sitting in front of the aquarium with the lid and straps on it, and our cat inside of it seeing if she could push the lid up...lol. She couldn't and there aren't any gaps, so it should be ok for a snake I think.

Now theres an idea...

I want to keep my cats in a 10 gal tank and let the snake run around! :devil01:

Jeff...

Some good suggestions already, but I think I would take out the big thermometers. I would replace them with very inexpensive probe thermometers that you can buy at a store like petco. I have one on each side of my viv and they are very accurate.

That is a 10 gallon tank? It lloks kinda tall for a 10 gallom though...but i could be wrong :)

heh my guy who i just got two days ago likes to go behind the coreners of the hides and just dig under the reptibark, but he was also fed the day before i gothim so maybe thats why hes not very active yet.

I agree howie that tank looks more like a 20 tall.
are you getting a young corn? If so you may wanna use smaller hides as suggested as well as those chep plastic vines from the dollar stores.
You also mentioned that the heat pad is on a ceramic tile. Is it sandwiched between the tile and tank? If so this is potentially a fire hazard the UTh should not be sandwiched.
I also agree with howie about the thermometers digital ones (check walmart) with a probe is the best way to go. That along with a thermostat or dimmer will give you a reliable means of controlling the temps

Sorry guys...10 gallon. It's 20" long X 10" wide X 12" high, I just measured it and ran it through an aquarium volume calculator online and it came out as 10.38 gallons...so it must just be the perspective of the picture!

The heater has 1/2 to 1/4" of space between itself and the glass. Some of the people I talked to said to leave no less than 1/8" so I'm assuming my setup is okay (feel free to tell me otherwise, because I'm new and I could've just gotten bad advice!).

The digital thermometers...are you talking about those little black strip thermometers that come with most fish tanks? That's the only thing I can think of because I saw them and I distinctly remember that they said "digital" because that sorta surprised me. The only other thermometers that I saw there were made for aquariums too. They were kinda bullet-shaped and had a suction cup on the top of them. Can anybody point me in the direction of a picture of one of the thermometers you're talking about?

very cool...definately haven't seen those around, but I'll keep looking. Do you put the probe on top of the substrate or down at the bottom on the glass?

When I first put them in my viv, I put them under the substrate on both sides. The reason, to see how hot the glass is under the substrate. Now, I have 1` probe (cool side) on the top of the substrate. I also put another one inside his hide. He is always in there and I don't want it to become to hot. The one hide is over the hot/cool side....

I think this will work if u can get the correct temps. I have mine the opposite way, i tape it to foil at the bottom of the tank and then raise the tank 1/8" so that there is some air flow

If you are close to a walmart they sell 3 different ones. The one i use measures the temp at the unit and at the probe. So i place the thermometer unit on the cool side, put the probe under his warm hide. that way i get the temp on both sides at the same time. Here's a pic it also measures humidity cost about $14

PetSmart last night

Yeah, I'm going to have to raise the tank up some. I just checked them again and the temps are 90/76, so I'm going to raise it up and see how what happens. See? This is why i'm doing this 2 weeks in advance...lol. The base of the thermometer (not the plastic part, but the actual thermometer) is sitting on the substrate, so it's going to be hotter down beneath.

I meant to ask this question last night and I forgot. A few people mentioned smaller hides. How big of a hide would be good for a 1.5 - 2 foot snake? I don't know how small of a coil they're comfortable in, so I got that one last night with the assumption I'd be able to use it at some point if it was too big now.

i really can even guess, but what i do know is that they prefer to feel "closed in" by their surroundings. so i usually get something a little smaller than what i "think" would be best. so far so good.

charlie is 18" long and he easily fits in that hide on the left side of my tank. The diameter is about 3"

yea, i still think smaller is better... especiually when they're young. I feel it help them feel safe and secure.

temps

an easier method to control the temp would be to get a lamp dimmer. Good ole walmart costs about $9

oh, looking much better! I love that wood thing, but then I have a weird thing for scraggly old scary blair witch looking trees... lol
