Viv will not reach 85

do you have a thermostat or rheostat connected to either of them?
where are you taking the temp reading from?
are both heating devices on the same side of the tank?
 
both of them are and my thermometer is between them and i havent got a thermostat because i dont want to buy a crappy one and i turn the heat lamp off at night
 
What is the temp right on the glass on the heat pad? How big is the heat pad compared to the bottom of the viv? 25%? 50%?

What brand of heat mat is it? I've heard Exo Terra Rainforest mats don't get very warm. But if you don't have a thermostat, that's a good thing.

All in all, I guess I wouldn't panic if you have 80F. I keep many of my vivs at 83F. Measured right on the glass in the middle of the heat mat, under the hide.
 
as your snake tends to be on the bottom of the tank, always remember to check temps on the ground level, if your measuring it half way up the tank then at ground level it might be too warm.
 
Agree with Mysfitz.

You don't want "the viv" to reach the ideal max temp - you need the area where the Corn is i.e. ground level, to reach the ideal max temp. What is the temp on the surface of the substrate, immediately above the heat pad?

Unregulated heat mats can get over 100 degrees within an hour - some can hit 120 degrees. I find it hard to believe that a mat+lamp without a stat, aren't producing temps over 80 degrees.

Also, have you tried another thermometer? It sounds so wrong that yours just might not be working properly.
 
Hey you guys were right!!!
Touched the heating pad and it burned me but i felt inside the hide and it was only a lil warm the only reason she prolly didnt get burned is because off layer of moss and there is an inch of bedding!!! i cranked it down a little with the control dial i have and now it seems fine but im getting a thermostat asap!!!!!
 
If you get a good way to measure temps you can use the dimmer, but you have to adjust it manually if the room temp changes a lot.
