Vivarium equipment?

Intravenous

New member
Hi,

New member here and my first post! Ok, first of all...I have never owned any kind of reptile, and secondly until this iyear I had never heard of a vivarium. Recently, however, snakes have caught my eye and I've been thinking of getting one in September (that gives me plenty of time to make up my mind and do research). If I do get a snake, it will be a single corn snake.

I was wondering what I would need for a complete set up for this kind of snake (light, heaters, thermostat and other regulators, etc.)

I found this site:

http://www.vivtronic.co.uk/

It appears to make vivariums and all the equipment needed, but I don't know what I would need or what size is appropriate.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Viv's are a nice choice, and they look really cool, but I just thought I'd tell you that their are other options. A plastic tub is a lot cheaper, and it's nice because you can upgrade the size as your snake grows, and it's also much easier to clean and move around. Plus you could always use a tub until you're snake is full grown and then put it in the big viv when it's ready. What I use is a Sterilite tub with a heating pad underneath it, mine's actually a human heating pad with different heat settings. I did use a heat lamp until I got the pad, but I hated leaving it on while I wasn't home, and a heating pad is more recommended. Just my humble opinion about the tub thing. I'm hesitant to tell you what sizes of vivs, since I'm not an expert and other folks on here know best. Good luck!

Ok, lets start by showing you a pic of one of my vivs:

now the essentials on your shopping list for a viv:

at least a 20L tank. for a hatchling or baby a lot of people recommend a 10 gal tank to start. then move them to the 20L tank when they get too big for the 10 gal.
heat pad (also known as a UTH) with a rheostat
two hides or caves (place one on the cool end of the tank and one on the warm end)
water bowl
screen top with clips or something to hold the lid on securely (corn snakes are known for their "houdini" escaping abilities)
substrate (aspen is highly recommended, though i use coconut bark)
digital thermometer with probe

non-essentials:
reptile hammock, vines, silk plants, grapevine..mostly for decoration but also provide hiding places for your snake.
clamp lamp...corns dont need light they're noctural and they dont need ambient heat. they need belly heat which they will get from the UTH.
