vivarium

Rachel,

Go to Pound stretcher (or any of those cheapie shops) and buy two tupperware boxes. I have all my snakes (bar one, and he'll be getting a new home tomorrow night) in tupperware and it's way more cost effective, easier to clean and carry to and from the bathroom to clean in the first place! believe me, the glass viv's are REALLY heavy and a nightmare to keep clean (I also find that they are harder to heat...think it's something to do with the glass).

You can buy really huge tupperware so space for your snake wouldn't be a problem and they are cheap, £5.99 for one that's roughly a foot x foot x just a bit less than a foot (lol :p ) They don't usually come with measurments but I just choose ones that look about half a length longer than the snake being housed in it so it can stretch out.

You can also buy fake plants from Pound stretcher for about £1.99, and small ceramic bowls (water bowls, or you could buy dog water bowls) for about £2.

Apart from that, I had to buy a heat mat (£15, maybe more or less depending on the size you get). I also got some bark with my first snake but don't have any for the others, I just use kitchen roll tubes and branches and stones from the beach as hides (make sure they are cleaned WELL!).

My mum's snake is on paper towels, my two are on hemp bedding.

Overall, the most expensive thing is buying them mice! Hope this has helped....

oh ps, a 30 gal aquarium type viv would cost about £25-30 depending on where you get it from.

I hope you have some money in reserve for vets bills also. If you are having trouble getting money for two vivs you may well not be able to afford vets bills....

I would just like to point out to anyone reading this that is thinking 'oh my god, I forgot about vet bills! Now my snake's sick and I have no money etc etc'

Well, you can take your snake to PDSA and, if you can prove that you can't afford vet bills for serious financial problems, they will treat you snake for free. I stress that this is only for people with SERIOUS financial problems. Just thought I'd point that out....

Interesting and usefull to know. But I would say its better to be able to go straight to the surgery and get the pet seen to than to have to mess about with proving you are poor. Besides if you are that poor should you be owning pets anyway? Really?

I can't really afford vet bilss either, but that is why I keep my snakes as healthy as possible, of course anything can happen at anytime, nomatter what.

But at least by taking proper care I can go to sleep at night and not worry if my snake'll need the vet in the morning.

This allows you time to save up for a vet as time goes on. I mean just as your saving for a better enclosure or new snakes the whole time.

Well it could be that someone had a pet and then became financially unstable. Alot of people also don't realise just how expensive vet bills can be and don't assume the worst when buying a pet (or get insurance) and could then be lumped with a huge bill because someone else ran over their dog (or something like that). Anyway, if there is a free service available, why should 'poor' people be discluded from the joys of pet owning?

Anyone who doesnt fully research the possible (probable?) costs of a pet doesnt deserve to own one, IMO. This involves vets fees.

Anyone who lets their dog run about off the lead near a road, or without supervision, isnt responsible enough to have a dog.

Pets are not a right they are a luxury. If you cant afford them you shouldnt have them.

WHY

I have read the majority of this post and have come to a happy conclusion all round.

Somebody needs to buy them poor snakes from who-ever owns them and give them a GOOD home where they they will be cared for by a responsible herper not a "moron"as someone said earlier.

If they were near me i would take em my self.

EtherRex,

I don't think you're getting the point. When I used the 'running over the dog' that was an example (and yes a bad one) but what I'm trying to say is that sometimes accidents do happen, through no fault of the owners and the bills can be enormous. Especially if physio etc is involved or something that will need to be treated for the rest of the pets life. Now, that is through no fault of the owners, and in my opinion I would rather that these people sought veterinary help than just leaving it because they can't afford it.

Anyway, this debate is a bit off subject. All I was originally trying to say is that there is help there for people who need it. Arguing about whether or not financially unstable people should own pets in the first place isn't going to change the fact that they do. The fact is they do, and there is a means for them to get vet. treatment for their pets and at the end of the day that's all that matters. their pets will be treated :D

JUST TO CLARIFY

I CAN nad repeat with emphasis CAN afford to go all out my parents will help iwth stuff theyve offered im just looking cuz of that lil thing called INDEPENDANCE as in i can't live off my mum and dad forever so i may as well start fundin my own interests now and as for vets bills the money again is available soooo don't start jumpin round bout money issues yeah i'm 15 but have my own means and ways of aqquiring money.

Ps. thanks rach it seems yer like the ONLY person who's actually READ what i've posted

@Rachel: Okay, things are getting a little heated here. Not my intention. Of course I agree that it is good that these pets can get treated rather than slowly bleeding out. That safety net is very usefull. However it shouldnt be used as an excuse not to take out insurance and save for possible vets fee's. That is just responsible pet ownership.

@Rachel132002: I understood your post as well as could be expected considering your blatant abuse of grammer, punctuation and capitalisation. Try writing in sentances if you wish to be understood. I am not an english teacher but you could at least try? I tried to help and then veered offtopic, for which I apologise.

S'cool, if people actually bothered reading posts properly then most of these 'arguments' wouldn't occur (and yes I'm as much to blame by skim reading posts and jumping to conclusions). Good luck wit ur snakes :D

EtherRex, sorry, didn't mean for things to get heated either. Just think we weren't understanding what each other meant.

Happy bunnies....... :D Its FRIDAY! Woo woo!!
