Warming up the cold end

I'm having problems keeping the cold end of my snake's viv from getting too cold. It's sitting at about 65F at the moment, and I want to get it up to the right level, but I don't want it to overheat either. Does anybody have any suggestions? It's only a plastic viv so I don't think i could use an overhead heat lamp on it.

The cold end of the vivarium is usually around the same as your room temperature. Is your house that cold? How are you measuring the temperature? Many thermometers don’t really give you a very accurate reading for snakes. The best way is to use a thermometer that has a probe that can be buried in the snake’s substrate. This way you are measuring the same temperature that the snake is feeling.

What is the temperature at the warm end of the cage? If you are keeping it around 85* then I think you are fine. The snake can move from a cool area to a warm area as he chooses and spend his time where he feels most comfortable.

As long as the warm end is at the optimum temperature, I wouldn't worry. There will be a zone midway that will be comfortable for the Corn. It's the high temps that will cause harm, not the low ones.

My snake stays in the garage and the cold side of its viv gets as cold as the entire garage (sometimes as low as high 50's) but since the warm end is always constant (high 80's) I don't worry about it. The snake will thermo regulate itself.

The warm end is at 85F and I've got a thermostat in there, so that should be OK.
Yes, unfortunately my house really is that cold! It's an old building and my heating is also antiquated.
I'm glad you all think my snake will be OK as long as the warm end is OK, but at the moment he's not eating, so I'm just trying to get his conditions right before I look at any other possible causes. He's a hognose, though, so I'll post a query on the other board.
Thanks for your help!

Ah - as you were in a Corn Snake forum, I've assumed you were talking about a Corn. Sorry - I don't know about Hoggies, so please disregard my advice above.
