Warning: Wired Vine in Viv....

Well yesterday I found a little scratch on Dani my 4 1/2 mth old Candy Cane. It was about 2 scales in length. Barely could see it. But really upset me! :( So I tore his viv apart looking for what could had done this. Well found a little piece of the wire poking out of the fake Ivy vine I have in his viv. I am SO angry at myself for not catching this on his last house cleaning which was just last wk!!
So I just want to put a warning out there for those who use these in your vivs. Too make sure you chk them out closes for any wire poking out. Just a little is all it takes to hurt your corn & if so it is very easily to cut it away. I had just moved everyone into new vivs & got Dani a new & bigger vine to crawl on ( he loves them ). Not sure how I overlooked it! If anyone knows of a better vine that doesn't contain wire in it. Please let me know. Mine appreciate the vines & I would love to keep them in.

Thanks guys!

when I ad vines or flowers that contain wire... I usually wrap the sharp ends in what is called "vet wrap' it very easily goes where you want it to and you just press it together... it sticks to itself but nothing else! :) cheap and easy fix.... and comes in many colors too :)

Oh cool thank you! I noticed on the vines that there are many breaks where the wire could possible split the rubber & come through. UGH why do they make this crap for reptiles!!!!! kwim?

TY! :D

your welcome :) It is of course safe to use around all animals... I have used it on my birds even when they were babies :) hehe I have a Hot Pink roll I am useing now.... makes things abit funky colored but the snakes dont seem to mind LOL

I have a little tree sorta plant thing that I picked up at the pet store (Designed for reptiles) It works pretty well and he loves climbing around in it. I often find him perched up in it.

You know this is something that worries me alot...there are driftwood/rock/moss type structures that I have seen at pet store around here, everything from local mom and pop type stores to the big chain stores; and they are basically held together with hot glue and wood screws. The main problem is that half of the wood screw is usually sticking out the back or is exposed in a large opening between the two pieces of wood. I have liked the look of these things and they make nice climbing things, but there is no way that I would put it in with a snake who is going to slither across that and come out with damaged scoot scales. or catch an eye on the point of the screw...what I don't understand is how the petstore people don't pick this up and see the danger.

I bought one of those vines myself a few weeks ago...

Needless to say when I poked my OWN finger on it (drawing blood) - I threw it in the trash.

I am lucky to live near the beach - which has LOTS of free driftwood to choose from. I just soak it in a weak bleach solution and bake it. I bought those stupid vines to give the cage a more "living woods" feel.

I agree - it is stupid for the pet stores to sell things like this!

I buy my fake plants and vines at the dollar store, most are just plastic. I guess they're so cheap they don't have wire. :shrugs:

Morphys Law~ sorry about your finger, the wire is very strong. Mine seem to really enjoy them.

Susan~ Love those stores & will chk out the home section :)

But poor Dani his 2 little scales that were injured are still brown & it hasn't gone away, its looks like it got smaller. I wonder when he sheds will it go then? Anybody know?

She should heal up fine. Use some neosporin on the area - a little dab should do the trick(the regular gel kind - not the kind with pain reliever in it).

The next shed should take care of it, BUT sheds sometimes get stuck at the point of an injury like that - just watch the next she sheds to make sure everything comes off ok.

As long as it is not infected, she should be fine.
