Hi Joner!

First of all "Welcome to the Forum"!

Is your Amel ready to shed? Usually soaking in the water bowl is to get moisture so that they can shed properly.
What is the humidity level in your tank? For a corn, it should normally be 40 to 50%.

As you are new in the Forum, here is some info you might find useful:

There is a lot of very nice people here with a lot of good advice and remember: "there are no stupid questions if you don't know the answers" so if you have a question…. It might already have been asked/answered and there is a search option which is very handy. ;)<!--[endif]-->

<!--[endif]--> Also, when I first joined the Forum, I was given two very handy/interesting url ( Lennycorn ) and it is now my turn to pass them on:

Hi there Joner, I see this is your first post so welcome to the forum.
There could be a few reasons why snake it soaking in water. Some just like too. Or it's getting ready to shed. Third, it could have mites.
We need a little more information too help you out better. Has the color of the snakes gone dull a little? It a sign of going into a shed cycle.
Do you see any black specks in the water or on you snakes?? If so these are mites. Post us back with any more information.

to add to Lennycorn's post, a way that can help to find out if it is mite indeed, you can put him/her on a white paper towel and then see if there are some dark specs ;)

Do you have appropriate sized hides (tight enough the snake is touched on all sides)? I've heard of snakes choosing the water bowl because they don't feel secure anyware else :shrugs: . Mites, about to shed, or just likes water are also likely culprits.

more info

my snake has 2 cork bark hides 1 at the cool end 1 at the warm as for black specks in the bowl i don't remember seeing any when i put fresh water yesterday i'm happy to say colin as we have named the snake is now under the hide at the cool end he/she was due a feed today which was taken almost as soon as it was offered. if it is mites are they harmful and how do you get rid of them, thanks to those who have replied already

Hi Joner,

To find information about how to get rid of mites, there is a mention of it in the following FAQ:
http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28342

Here is what it says:
Q: I see several small block dots moving on my snake--what is that?
A: Welcome to the wonderful world of snake mites. They are the most common parasite that you will encounter and one of the biggest pains to get rid of. I have personally used Sevin Dust without a problem, but some people recommend a diluted Nix treatement. Since I have no experience with that, I will just link some threads regarding the issue.

Also, you can find different solutions on the link below:
http://animal.discovery.com/guides/reptiles/diseases/mitesticks_02.html
but also read the previous page as it tells you about diagnoses

Good luck!

thanks to all for your advice got in touch with the shop where i got him and they have obliged by taking him in to get rid of the ifestation and are suppling me with all new bedding and hides

Good news they are prepared to deal with the problem!

By the way, what was it? Mites??

yes it was mites on closer inpection they were all gathering on the underside of his neck just back from his lower jaw poor little tyke but fingers crossed it will be a happy ending

just got colin back and he is mite free now just wondering how often i should be feeding him he is probably getting on for 18 inches long now and i've been feeding 1 pinky every 6 days
