Jaffar turned one year old in Sept. and had been gaining quite steadily, now she's been slowing down. Just wondering if this is normal for a yearling.

7/25/2015 108g hopper
8/7/2015 shed
8/9/2015 107g hopper
8/16/2015 110g hopper
8/23/2015 110g hopper
9/6/2015 120g hopper
9/13/2015 128 g hopper
9/20/2015 128g hopper
9/27/2015 136g hopper
10/5/2015 146g hopper
10/11/2015 145g hopper
10/14/2015 shed
10/18/2015 145g hopper
10/24/2015 148g hopper

Just thought I'd throw in her weights so you'd know exactly what I am dealing with.

I've not been around the site lately, but I appreciate any input.

Thanks in advance. :)

yes normal.

Some Corn Snakes can double in size their first 3 months, then double again by a year. Then double again over the course of the rest of their life.

Babies can shed every 2 months, and by the time they are 4 or 5 years old they may only shed 1 or 2 times a year.

They grow pretty fast as youngsters and get slower with age.

I just checked and when I got her last November she was only 10g. Amazing how much she's grown. She's beautiful and always has complete sheds. However they used to be every 6wks or so and now it was closer to 8wks. As I imagine will continue to slow down as she ages.

I usually move mine up to weanlings about 95grams, and then adult mice at about 175 grams.

The decrease in weight gain might be because you are still feeding hoppers.

I can't remember what feeding chart I saw it on but I thought I couldn't move up til she was 150g. Well, I am out of hoppers anyway and need to go buy more mice before next feeding. I will try the next size up.

The mice I've been feeding say small mice on the box, not hoppers and they're about 12g. I don't know if the pet store I buy from has a size between them and the adult mice.

according to the Munson Feeding Plan, your snake at 148 grams should be eating mice that weigh 13 to 20 grams. Those mice are often referred to as "Weanlings" but some stores sell Small, Medium, and Large. This is true of the "Arctic Mice" brand sold at PetsMart. The Large in that brand run right at 19 grams each. I've used them before.

Different stores sell different brands and the packaging is different as well. Carry a small calculator with you (your phone probably has a calculator in it). If the box of mice says for example: Net Weight 2.53 oz, contains 4 mice. Then divide the weight by the number of mice to get weight per mouse. So 2.53/4= .63 (but that is in ounces) To turn it into grams multiply by 28 (there are 28 grams to 1 ounce). So, each mouse weighs 17.6 grams, etc.....

if you are gonna go up to weanlings you may as well buy it online, she won't go up too many more sizes, so you can easily buy 50 weanlings and 50 adult mice, pay the flat fee shipping and you are set for the next two years for 90 bucks or so..

I just bought the artic brand mice from Petsmart in size large, it said 76g total on the box, but I got home and they were all larger. One was 28, one was 26, one was 25 and one was 22. That was the smallest so I will try it but I'm thinking I need to do something different for the next feeding cause the others are too big. They don't have a size between small and large at the Petsmart near me.

is there a possibility that your scale is off or needs re-calibration? The totals you mention above add up to 101 grams. I've found slight discrepancies in packaging before but nothing like that. I have the same 4 pack of arctic mice myself (I've used 2 of them already) and they were pretty much right on the mark minus a gram for the plastic wrapper they are each in. So I'd definitely look into the scale or maybe see if you could borrow another scale. Also, the PetsMart near me sells the Arctic Mice in a medium size as well. Maybe your local store was just out of them. Maybe ask them next time you visit.

The 22 gram mouse you have should be no problem, but if your scale is correct and the others weigh like you said, I'd save them for a few more feedings until your snake is a tad bit heavier.
