western hognose snakes

I am bummed!!! I just called a very reputable dealer of reptiles here in OK and he said that they can't sell E. or W. Hognose snakes because they are native to OK and therefore are illegal to sell!! I knew that you could not own native reptiles but I never thought about the hognose. Dagnabit!!!!

Hognose

Well I picked up a Hognose a couple of months ago, mad as box of frogs IMO :crazy02: My guy is really lively, tries to be scary with the big hiss leave me alone I'm a rattlesnake thing but all in all is quite ok with being handled once out of the viv, and of course is a bottomless feeding pit!

I have a question for you guys. I know someone who caught a hognose not too long ago and it seems to have suffered a head injury. It acts fine and is active and all but one eye is fogged over and the other had dried blood on it. Can you suggest anything to help this poor little guy? He asked if he should return it to the wild and let it take it's chances but I said it would be more apt to be picked up by a predator right now. That if he wanted to keep it as a pet, he should just keep it comfortable and see if the wound heals. I haven't had any experience with this so, I am asking y'all. :shrugs:

If he wants to keep it as a pet I'd say bring it to the vets for a parasite/bacterial check as well as getting the eyes checked out. My guess is that it would probably be best to let them heal on their own but a vet would be able to give you more options. No matter what he'll want to have the snake checked for icky bugs that he got outside.

Heres one of my holdback albino's from last year.I'm anticipating 3 clutches this year from my 100% het females X albino male. So far the only morphs that are proven are two types of albinism and a hypo morph.I've owned & bred what some people are trying to sell as red or green phases.
Unfortunately they haven't proven out as recessive or codominate traits.
The last 3 photo's are of 100% hets.

I agree with taking it to the vet more than likely it will have parasites. It is hard to say if the cloudy eye is from an assault or a bad shed. If you or your friend take it in, keep it away from any reptiles that you currently own. he would probably appreciate a soak and a warm place to sleep.

Good luck.

That albino is very pretty! I have not heard of the red phase (I am really new to this species). Have you been raising them for while?

:-offtopic Are you ever at the Harmer House show and if so where are you usually at? I am trying to get there on May 21. I have been there twice. I meet Katie (PtDnsr) there. I would like to stop by and say hi.

How big of a tank do these need to be in?

Wow!! That is neat! They are such an interesting snake. Have you noticed any trends in their popularity?

I was wondering this also... I have my baby hognose in a 10 gal but my adult corns are in cages that are 36"L x 18"W x 13"H, that should work when he gets older right?
