What a hen party! (new chickens)

hana

I put the 'pygmy' in ban.
I wanted to share a few pictures of my new bantam chickens with y'all.. The rooster and one of the hens are Golden Sebrights, and I'm not sure exactly what the other three hens are called. I did ask, but it was 5 in the morning when I bought them, so the information didn't stick. ;)

Four girls for one boy should make for a very happy rooster. :grin01: Now the task of getting names for them all.. They'll have to get in line behind the cresties and the snakes that lack names before they get their names. Some day I'll get to it..

I have two of the hens with the silver heads (one wouldn't stay still for pictures), and one of the buff headed ones. The rest of their bodies are they same, just the heads are different.

Misty, if you know what the other two types of hens are, I'd be very happy to learn what they are. :)

The trimming of black on the feathers makes them look like stained glass panels. Beautiful. If I was out of city limits I would have chickens like that!

On a side note, I just did some digging and found out that the two hens with the silver heads are Silver Duckwing Old English.. Still not clear on the last one.. :)

And Diamondlil, thank you! I think they're purty too. :)

My sister had english game bantams, I've never kept chickens but one of her roosters got so tame he would come to the kitchen door for breakfast!

Chickens are pretty easy to keep.. I used to have a pet chicken when we lived in the city.. One of the great things about the bantams is the tiny voice. The rooster crowed whilst we were in the car this morning and I nearly died laughing. I doubt you could hear him in the next room much less the next house. :)

And for some reason I have a funny feeling that chicken shows are in my future..

Wow, those are beauties!

One of my co workers has a very beautiful rooster.. he's black with green tinted feathers. He's asked me to take over care for him, saying he's too noisy! I'm not sure I'm up to take care of him consitering the noise factor and that I have no idea how to care for them. If I don't take the poor guy in though he may end up as an entree. I work at a Chinese Restaurant.
What kind of enclosures are suitable for Roosters? Are they prone to become more agro if they are without females? When I was holding the Rooster before my coworker took him home I was warned that he would "fly like the bird".

The two non-Sebright hens remind me of Old English Game Bantam hens, just different colors.

Unless they're purebreed and he said so, they could simply be a mix of whatever was around to make the eggs. That's how its going around here. One rooster and 20+ hens is a lot to try to think about who might be the mom.

Beautiful little guys though. =)

Thanks Misty, I'm pretty darn pleased with them.. :) I think I'd like a few more Sebrights though.. It seems that the last hen with the non-silver head is a BBRed hen..
The guy was pretty picky about his chickens and he told me, but like I said 5 am is too early for information to stick.. ;)

Why were you buying them at five a.m.? I'm also curious about how much chickens cost, not that I want to get some. They accually need some space which I don't have.

There's an animal swap about 20 miles from my house.. It's mostly farm stock; chickens, goats, pigs and the like.. It starts at 5:30, but if you don't get there about an hour ahead of time the line to get in is almost a mile long.. It's a fun time if it doesn't pour down rain the entire time like it did today.. :)

Congrats on the new cluckers... the sebrights are gorgeous!

My mom used to have four, can't remember what kind but they were black & white and then red. They roamed our yard for years. I don't think I'd have them again though, but if there were as pretty as that sebright rooster I might think about it! (Just don't tell Tim! lol)

I know this thread is old as dirt, but just to let you know, as you stated, the two silver headed ones are silver seabrights, and the other one is a Black Breasted Red hen, commonly called a BB red. As old as this thread is, I doubt its even relavent any more.
