It is.............

Amelanistic, but what variation?

It's pretty tough to tell just how a snake like that will develope. Just by looking at it, I'd say it's probably just an avarage amel. It may have come from Candycane or Sunglow lines and is just not the best of the clutch.

That's the problem with buying site-unseen. You really have to trust the seller.

I'd call them and see what can be done. The least that they should do is compensate for the treatment of the mites!

Thats what I said on a different forum, looks like it could have CC in it somewhere (het CC maybe??) but def shouldn't have been sold as a pure anything other than amel (ie shouldn't have been sold as a CC or Sunglow at higher prices when it should have been sold as an amel at amel prices).

I just went and spot read the thread you have on the UK forum. These types of situations are not uncommon. The breeder may have some fairly nice Candycane adults and they sell the offspring as Candycanes reguardless of how they look .

There may also be some confusion about the genetic makeup of Candycanes. The only simple recessive gene they have is amelanism. If it's an amel, it can't be het Candycane. Candycanes are selectively bred for the white background color. They are just amels that have a certain look to them.

I don't have a lot of experience with raising Candycanes (only raised 6 or 7 from hatchlings so far) but the ones I've seen grow do not lose yellow as they grow. They may lose some red in the background but I doubt you'll get a very nice example of a Candycane from that one.

This snake appears to be about the same age as yours, you can clearly see that the white background is cleaning up nicely.

Just remember that the pics you see on the net are probably the best examples of the breeders hard work. Not all of the babies from the same clutch as this one are near as nice!

The snakes I hatch that look like this one are priced accordingly. The other snakes that may, or may not develope later on are just a bit higher then an average amel.

Thanks for clearing that up...I knew cc's were just selectivley bred amels but someone threw me by suggesting a corn could be het cc (a breeder no less!!). Either way, you shouldn't have paid what you did for your snake nor should you have received it with mites!!

*sigh*

My god, we all get everywhere don't we! :D

(Hi Rachel)

Well, C2C are insisting that its a candy cane, not an amel..

they seem insulted that a mere mortal such as I should question the description of one of the biggest breeders of corn snakes in the UK and Europe.

*Cou-bull****e-gh*

They will not budge an iota on what it should be called, it is a candy cane as far as they are concerned and that is that. It is not and has never been an amel, and nor where its parents. And that one was the supposed best of the bunch.

They are also insistent that it left their shop with no mites or bugs on at all, the inference there being that it picked them up on route I guess.... despite me having witnesses here that saw me examine and remove the mite from the snake, and who saw the two mites in the water after she had been soaked.

Hey ho, one lives and learns..

these are the links incase anyone else is interested..

It is.....

And always will be an amel.

What makes it a Candycane is color placement and intensity of those colors.

The looks of that snake at this point in time say "I'm not a Candycane". It is possible that it may change a bit but I wouldn't count on it.

If it is from Candycane stock and they insist it's a Candycane then I would conceed it as a grade 'C' Candycane at best.

If that's the best they have to offer then I'd look elsewhere for a grade 'A' Candycane.

This little guy (gal?) was sold to me as an amel. Looks pretty similar to your with, perhaps, a bit more yellow. It's hard to tell. A great pet shop here in the U.S. is www.thatpetplace.com
The usual disclaimers apply; I have no connection, etc. They know reptiles. I even had to sign a paper that I understood their care instructions and had the proper environment ready for the snake before we were allowed to bring it home.

I'm sorry, but the only about that animal that reminds me of a candycane is that you now find yourself in a sticky situation! It is an amel, and all the protestations of the shop from which you purchased it only cause me to believe that they are ill-informed, dishonest, or both.

I would definitely look elsewhere next time around!

It is a pretty little amel, by the way . . . ;)

Nerys, if i were you mate I'd just use it as an excuse to get another in the DAMN i really wanted a CC but couldn't send this litlun back to possibly pick up the mites i just got rid of and what not so I'll jsut have to keep him/her and get the candycane too lmao works to the vantage in excuse terms.
