I'm just curious to know how many, if any of you, feed or have at least tried your corns on rats.

I have a friend with a 200+ g. corn whom she acquired from someone on craigslist. Previous owner obviously purchased rat pinks in bulk and was feeding 4 f/t rat pinks to his corn a week. We don't like the idea of feeding this many multiples and are trying to increase his meal size to what he should be eating (1 adult mouse or rat of equal size). Last night my friend tried offering him an adult mouse f/t and he showed no interest. So far this snake has been a very good eater for her. I'm not sure if it's because he isn't used to fur or because he's gotten the taste for rats.

We also both have ball pythons that are eating live adult mice. We'd like to switch them over to f/t rats since they'll eventually need the bigger size prey... should we start with rat fuzzies or pups (for feeding both the BPs and the corn)?

We're trying to decide so we can place an order with the mouse factory but this is proving to be difficult considering her corn's current diet and the fact that our BPs are used to feeding on live mice. I just don't want to be wasting money if we can avoid it... and there isn't any pet store around here who even has rats (live or frozen of any size) so we can't do a test run to see what is preferred.

Another reason we're considering switching to rats is because the mouse factory doesn't have adult mice at the moment. :shrugs:

I have one snake that eats rats- Maizey, my adult male LTC corn, who had (has?) a regurging problem is on rat pups. Three pups weigh as much as a mouse, and he (so far so good, keep fingers crossed) keeps them down just fine. Actually, I've been feeding my eastern hoggy on rat pups, too. And once in a while I'll give one or two to my tri-color hoggy.

when i picked up my corns they were on mice, as i bred my own rats i switched them, i ran low so had to purchase feeders and ended up with mice, after just 2 feedings on rats most of the corns seemed not interested in the mouse(one sat with the mouse in it's mouth for 10 minutes before finally starting to swallow) altho they did all eat.
i have not tried my corns on mice since, i am pretty sure that at least 1 will not readily switch back.

i have a king who wouldn't eat for 2 months, i culled a couple of mice and decided to give it a shot, she attacked.
she is a die hard mouser apparently, sadly i didn't clue in to her not eating to the switch to rats(male had been on rats for months)

I raise rats and hamsters as I am alergic to mice. In a pinch when I run short the adults will eat mice. I do not let the hamsters get above fuzzy size so they do not see adult hamsters. They yearlings I firmly believe will eat anything that moved, but in comparing growth patterns some snakes that were very slow growers on micehave blossomed wonderfully on the rats. I feed about 60 rats a week to 40+ snakes. I would like to eliminate raising the hamsters but until I get some ASF Rats breeding regular like I need to keep the hamsters producing regular so I have pinkies when babies arrive.
Peace
Scott

i recently put a 30 gram 20" corn on rat pinkies and she's takes them good.

if your corn is on fuzzies switching to rat pinks will be fine.

My corn is only 6 grams (13" long), so probably months away from even being ready for a rat pink. lol I was just curious to know what size corn can handle a rat pink. Thanks for giving the stats on your corn. That helps give me an idea.

My friend's corn is around 200 grams and currently getting 4 rat pinks a week... and still hungry. He showed no interest in a small adult mouse, but I was thinking maybe a rat fuzzy might appeal to him more (less fur and he already likes rat pinks) so we can get him up to what he should be eating.

Just heard that friend's BP took a f/t adult mouse... so that's good! Maybe the transition will go better than I worried about... at least for the BP.

Placed an order with TMF. Will see how it goes. I need to make a run to the LPS tonight away to get a fresh victim for my BP tonight :licklips: so will get an extra to freeze (and maybe an extra to keep for scenting purposes in the near future) and try my BP on f/t next week.

Rats

I feed rats because studys show that rats have more nutrishinal value AND they are big, but cheap. I have ruled :smash: :D

Picky, picky...

My corn snake eats mice. But not just any mice. She will only eat the brown ones with brown eyes. If it has red eyes, or is white with red eyes, or is just white, she wont' touch it... so picky!! Does anyone else have this issue???

I agree with you here. If you find any could you post some links? I have read / heard that rats are healthier prey items (if you are able to feed them) and always feed rats myself. If I find some links I will post as well.

Ps. This is NOT! to say that everyone feeding mice are not giving their animals the nutrition they need because thats not true, I just mean its Dole not Food Club (if you get my reference).

I used to feed my 6 foot corn small rats (weaned). She took them fine. She had a mix of mice and rats over the years. I never noticed a preference. I switched to rats later because of her size.
