Ok i just got 2 adult corn snakes on wed and one of them is a perfect little thing. I held her and she loved it. But she is laying eggs now and about to shed so i am leavin her alone. But the male seems like he wants to bite me. When ever i walk in the room he pops out of his hide very slowly flicking his toung like mad. Also when ever i put my hand in there to he is constantly watching it. Does this mean he wants to bite me? thanks
 
The flicking of the tongue thing is perfectly natural and all healthy snakes do it- it's just curiosity.

The fact that he watches your hand doesn't necessarily mean he's going to bite but snakes can be very unpredictable so you can't really tell. Every time you put your hand in a snake's cage you risk getting bitten, whatever their temperment. Doesn't exactly fill you with confidence, does it but snakes usually only bite for a reason ie. as a feeding response or because they're scared. Try not to worry about it too much, just be careful when you put your hand in the cage.
 
how should i take him out of the cage? The female ( scooter) just comes right out when i open the lid. She is a nice snake. She comes out right into my arms. But he just stays in his hide. Should i pick up the hide and take him out by just grabbing him?
 
I'm not entirely sure about picking snakes up as I have sliding glass fronts so my snakes just glide out on their own accord. Swooping down and grabbing the snake wouldn't be a good idea. Instead, you might try laying your hand down on the floor of the cage and waiting until he crawls onto it, then pick him up. If, however, he turns out to be one of the very (but rare) aggressive ones, then you may have to resort to using a handling hook. Other people will have better ideas than mine, I'm sure.
 
The flicking of tongue is only just a sign of sniffing you. My snakes loves to do that. They check me out and see what is going on. I would say that the male is just a nosy little male....

I just put my hand in their tanks/enclosures and pick them out whenever I want. I have never been bitten (except for one because she is super nippy before being taken out of her enclosure). But other than that one, the others are just as sweet as a pie....lets me hold them whenever I want. Some even tries to crawlout when they see me around.

So I wouldn't really worry much about bitting.

When you see an aggressive snake, it's usally rattling of tail and head in a 'S' position defending and ready to strike.

Since you said flicking it's tongue, there shouldn't be anything wrong just picking him up in it's tank. But of course there are always possiblity of it bitting....but very slim chance....

Well i just tried to take him out again but right when i reached my hand in there he jumped righ back into his hide. When i walk around in my room he is all jumpy. I took a picture of what he looks like when he comes out of his hide.As you can see he was flicking his toung again in the picture.

That's a very nice looking snake you have there!

It jumped back because he was shy. Nothing to worry about, it's normal. Just take him out and he should have tons of fun...
 
Hey thanks for the compliment! He is just shy? I though he was scared and ready to bite? Ill take him out tommorrow. Well i lifted up his hide too and he seemed curious as to what i was doing. So ill take him out tommorrow. I fed him a day or 2 ago so ill let it digest.
 
Reptiles can smell fear. Actually most animals can. If you are worried he is going to bite you the he just might. He will be defencive because he smells the fear and that means you are either preditor or prey. See what I mean?? You wouldnt be scared if you were not up to something wrong. That is what he thinks. Hope I am clear.

Give it a day or to and go in there with a friend and talk to them as you are getting him out of the cage be alert but dont foccus all your energy on him. Try not to get scared even if it means putting your hand in there with your eyes closed. Hope that helps
 
well guys thanks for your advice! I took him out a few mins ago and he was just a little explorer!! I set him on my bed and he went in and out of my blanket. He was checkin everybody out. There was ONE small but smelly problem. I though he was going to sleep on me ( he wasnt moving) but it turns out he really ended up pooping all over my bed! He got very little on me but it still made me throw all that i was wearing and my sheets in the wash. It was VERY VERY smelly. But i know the cage will be poop free for awhile! It was a great thing that i got to hold him though. We ( my dad and I) took off the top and removed his hide. He just climbed right out of the cage like scooter does! Thanks allot guys now i can hold him without the fear of getting bit. Infact my stepmom held a hamster right before holding the snake but the snake showed no sign of wanting to bit.

Much like your pulse changes when you are lieing or nervous. You also release a sent. I am not sure what it is. But anumals can smell it and they a good judge of character. Did you ever hear the expression never trust someone who a dog and or a baby doesnt like? Same thing. It is a survival instinct for smell.
 
Glad you got to finally enjoy your snakey! You always have to be on the alert holding them after they have eaten. Little stinkers will get you every time! :D

Corn Crib- One of my adults waits three days after eating and then has one large poo. The other two will sometimes go 2 or 3 times. I have found that if I look down by their vent I can see a dark area and I know they will be "depositing" again.

Fast tongue flicking means the snake is just checking out the surroundings. Not to worry.

Slow tongue flickings mean the snake is homing in on a target. Potential for a bite.
 
i fed him 3 days ago last night. It was fun holding him though. But the poo was the worst smelling thing ever! The female is deinatly going to shed because her eyes are very cloudy and her skin is a very very light color .... almost pink now ( she is a amel). How much longer do you think until she sheds her skin?
 
She will shed sometime between today and next week. Lol. Seriously, usually it's about 2-4 days but it could be less or more, depends on the snake.

Glad you liked handling your snake but sorry to hear you got poohed on! Lol. Better luck next time. My python likes to do that but the corn never does it.
