what does the "F" in F1, F2 ect. mean

I understand the concept 1st generation 2nd ect. , but would like to know what the "F" actualy means.

i think the f stands for Filial(sp?) so F1 would be the first Filial generation and i'm am not* sure wht it means so wait till others reply before you accept mine but i think i learned that it means other than the parental so the F1 would be the children of the parental gneration... hope that made sense LOL :) sorry if it didn't
 
Filial means "offspring generation", so it's designating the generation or sequence of generations following the parental generation.
