As some of you know. Stewie did eat his first meal in about 3 months now... but he also hasnt shed in 3 months... When i was feeding him sunday i didnt notice this but today when i was watching those pics.. i saw this... can anyone tell what it is? its right on his nose...and some other pics of how he looks like right after his small meal and his whole body to see his skin tone.
I apologize for the big size images

To me, it looks like a shed is starting. On his nose: it seems some old skin has come loose. Then just stopped. Does he have a mois hide? try soaking him to see if that helps loosen the peeled-back skin. Just don't try to pull it off.

Thank you all for the comments
I am following what you told me and see if its going to help him
I somehow dont believe its dust.. i think its dry skin.. he hasnt shed for 3 months..

If he hasn't eaten, I wouldn't think he would be shedding.
He sure looks good and healthy to me. :shrugs:

Snakes do have nostrils to breathe from right?

What im afraid of is that those are closed due to the dry shed or whatever it is.. its only his head that looks duller color.. the rest of his body is not changing although i am making sure its enough moist in there to make him shed..

I also want to let you know he ate his second consecutive meal.. woohoo
but i noticed the shed part really getting bad on his face

so my question is.. if they have holes to breathe from on their nose.. i dont see any and to tell you the truth.. the pics i took of him last night.. he has his mouth open just like in this first picture .... whihc i havent seen before..

im just worried that he isnt breathing fine.
I know some of you will disagree but if its possible to have the holes closed then i should show you the pics

Yes, snakes have nostrils. Your snake has them too. As best I can tell from the first picture, his nostrils look clear to me. If they weren't, you'd hear him make sneezing type noises.

His mouth isn't open in the first picture. The little hole there is for his tongue to flicker out, but his actual mouth is closed.

Relax, your snake is just fine.

Like the others said your snake does look healthy. Just to be on the safe side I would suggest checking for mites. When my BP had mites he had some white flakes kind of like that around his eyes and heat pits that I was told was mite poo. Although if it is mites I would expect the snake to have gone into shed much sooner than 3 months in attempt to rid of them. To check for mites simply use a paper towel or white cloth and run it down the length of the snake and then inspect the cloth closely for any moving pepper sized critters.

Hi Rorryy
thats a really good thought> i never thought about why he has those things on top of his eyes.......

I am going to post pics and you look at them if you can please

THanks

I know i might am being like a pain in the a$$ but i am really not certain that everything is ok with this little guy

Heres why..
I zoomed in on those pics for you guys to look at them better..
Id like for someone to please show me where exactly the nostrils are.. I checked other peoples snakes and they surely are visible.
I just cant disregard the fact that the skin covers them and that he has those bluewish dots on top of his eyes..

Becky I know you said this, i know stewie looks healthy but these are things i dont want to ignore because my friends snake died exactly like that... he was told his snake was fine until it died....so can you take a look when you have the time please?
thank you

P.

I would agree with the assessment that he is due to shed and the skin that has dried around his face is showing up more around the edges of the mouth and nostrils. Their head's swell periodically as well. You might notice a whistling when he breaths and a few people I've talked to have actually had their snakes start open mouth breathing from getting the nostrils plugged by the fluids that help the skin shed off. I would put a humid hide in the cage or mist once or twice a day until he sheds. I'm sure he'll be fine.

Hi Meg!
thank you for saying that, its what i thought because i noticed the skin was closing in and i saw him breathe with his mouth open a few times but i cant say about the whistling because i havent been tryign to listen.
I am misting it twice a day.. its been almost a week now.

So im hoping at some point he will.

thank you for the help

I also think he looks a little dry...like he's about to shed. Are you just misting or does he actually have a hide (like a tupperware container) that has moist moss in it?

Just misting twice a day and have a towel covering 3/4 of the tank cover

but ive always used this method with him ever since he was a baby and i never had a shed problem before.. always one piece... maybe once or twice had it a couple pieces..
but he has been going through hunger strike and all that acting up stuff..

So im hoping it would work....

I would go ahead and make him a moist hide. It looks as if he may need a bit of extra help this time. Simply take a large plastic container (with a lid) that is big enough for him to get into, and cut a hole in the side of it. Be sure the hole is large enough so that he doesn't have to cram himself through it. Next fill the bowl with damp sphagnum moss or paper towels. I prefer the moss because it retains moisture MUCH better than paper towels. Whichever you choose, you will get it wet then wring out as much water as possible before putting it in the container. Put the hide on the warm end of the tank.

I am going to make his hide right now.. I looked at what i have and its not sphagnum moss. it sais green moss .. does it make a difference?
How long am i supposed to leave the moss in water? or wet it!?

and one more question
How often do i need to change the moss or wet it again?

Usually sphagnum moss is what you want. It is looser in density and easily lets water be sqeezed out of it. You just soak it in the water for a minute or so and then wring out the excess. I'd check it every few days to make sure it's still moist and not developing any mold.
