What is wrong with my setup?

Try misting every day, and maybe using a moist hide. You could also do with another hide, one on the cool side, and one on the warm side.

They're not aestetically pleasing to the eye (yours) but your snake won't care. Take a couple of cardboard rolls from an empty roll of toilet paper or paper towels, cut them in half lengthwise and put them in various places in the tank. This will give him the opportunity to find the place with the most comfortable temperatures and still feel secure. You could also use an empty margerine tub (smaller the better) and cut an opening in it and use that as a hide. Next time he goes into a shed cycle, get some moss from the pet store (or shred some paper towels if you can't make it down to the store) and dampen them up and put that in your margerine tub hide (helps if you kept the lid (which will be the floor now) to keep the aspen from getting soggy and sucking all the moisture out of the moss. This will give him a localized moist environement that he will seek out in order to help loosen up his old skin. None of this makes your snake's tank 'pretty' but he doesn't care a bit. He's much more into functionality.

While you're at the pet store getting the moss, grab a Zilla brand digital thermometer (or better, two!) with a probe, and put one probe on each end, on the glass, below the aspen. Once you get everything sorted out and have established a Warm and Cool side, having 2 thermometers will let you monitor his temps much better. True, your gun is more accurate, but the digital thermometers are there all the time and you can check temps at a glance, which means you'll do it more often.

Glad there is more of a resolution than there was last night.
When it comes to "setting up the tank" the general policy is:
-A hide on the hot side
-hide on the cool side
-waterdish not on the hot side (also you might want to consider getting a smaller one to avoid cleaning it less because he's so tiny right now and it's a pool)
-aspen
But the bigger the tank and of course the smaller the snake the more hides you should have, like Bruce said it doesn't have to be aestetically pleasing, but pretty much anything will work as long as it's nice and snug for your snake.

*cough* I'm shocked no one had asked this before. Is there a window? I know that it's cold outside, minus the past few days where it was nice, but even if you crack it that should help. If you don't have one in that room leave the door open and open the nearest window that will flow into that room.

Also, you really should have a cooler room for your PC. Thats way to hot, I'm not sure what you do on it but you are killing that thing faster than you need to be.

If nothing else go buy more fans, put one or two on your snake and three on the back side of your PC.

Good luck!

Thank you to all that posted here. The temps are now more in line with the post by susang
70-75 cool side 80-85 warm side.
Mine is 78 cool side 83 warm side. warm side is getting heat from the PC.
The UTH is off and the pet supply store is ordering my regulator that was suggested by Maize411 in the youtube video.

I do have a double window in here, and open it when I start to develop beads of sweat. lol. I will open it more often, especially when the temps get past 85.

I thank you all and Max owes you all his health & life! He's definitely a lot happier. I'll update a pic of his viv when I get it all decorated.

LOL Nichole, you must be in IT... I was thinking the same thing when he mentioned the temps coming off the PC. Our server room at work is the coldest room in the building :)

Glad you are getting your temps down and I know your new little guy is too :) You can buy vines at the local Walmart pretty cheaper that would give you the greenery a lot cheaper than the local petstore. And I second the toilet tubes. My little anery had a piece of a Christmas paper roll that he spent almost all his time in and my little female, who was a cobra and now thinks she's a tree boa has a paper towel tube hanging from her ceiling and she loves it up there.

Like the cat commercial, cheaper seems to be more fun for a snake :)

lol. I'm not but the man is so I asked him and well he spent about 50 mins explaining why the room needed to be cooled down. I listened to about 5 words. "The room is too hot."

My server has a case huge case fan in the back, front, side, and one on the processor. The room is hot because of the PC and all the other equipment in here. The fans are pushing the heat into the room. Fans don't cool, they just move the air. It is drawing cool air in, moving it past the hot electronics, causing the air to heat up, then moving that hot air into this room. Repeat, repeat, repeat, till the "cool" air isn't cool anymore, and the room temp gets hotter, hotter, and hotter. The cycle settles down when the room temp is close to that of the electronics. Something has to change to break this cycle. You're right... Open the window. :grin01:

I must be tired because this thread and a couple others (should Janine do a poll) are just making me laugh. I'm sorry Diegoboy, I"m just thinking how hot that room must be and I see your little snake with a fan saying Dad cool me down. Then theirs your name I want to say go to "old town" and have a marguerita, cool down a little. This isn't funny but I can't stop laughing. susang
