What "separate" container do you feed your corn in?

Corn uber Noob
Just looking for good suggestions. I can only assume that the best way is to feed them in "said" separate container w/in their normal tank/enclosure (me = 50gal breeder tank).

Hey neighbor.

Depends on the size of the corn. Hatchlings, I use the deli cup method. As they get too big for the deli cup I go to an 8 quart snapping lock lid container I picked up at K-mart. When they get too big for that I go to a 17 quart one.

I feed in separate containers for 2 reasons.
First and most important, is to keep them from ingesting substrate. Even if hand feeding, some snakes will just naturally want to constrict. Substrate gets caught between snake and prey and sometimes sticks.
The second is to "teach" them that feeding takes place elsewhere. If you feed in the Viv, you will sometimes end up with a snake that will strike at anything moving in there.
Can be annoying when you want to change the water etc.

ok the first point I understand. I keep my snakes on newspaper so that hasn't been an issue. As far as corns striking at anything that moves. I don't think that has much to do with where you feed them. I have many corns here and feed them in thier enclosures and have only had a couple that were aggresive ever and I'm sure they would be agresive no matter what. I'm not trying to start any trouble, it's just that I read stuff here and can't figure out why people do certan things. Out of about 125 I have here at this time not one trys to bite me when I open thier enclosure

Yeah, that's fine, like I said the ingestion of substrate is the main reason. I have a few corns that will still rush to my hand, but never strike. I have king snakes also and a few of them have VERY strong feeding responses. The practice of feeding in a separate container is somethig i started with the kings and just carried over to the corns. A "I thought you were a mouse" bite from a hungry king is not fun, they just keep chewin'.

My reasoning exactly.

I also keep bigger snakes besides corns and I'd rather not have a boa attach it's self to any part of me.

For my young'uns, I fold down the top of a paper lunch sack, put the mouse inside it, put the snake inside it, and put the entire thing in the viv. That way the snake will never associate my hand with feeding, only the paper sack. The sack offers a bit of privacy for supper, and as soon as they're done eating they can head back to their normal hide (although some prefer to stay put and I have to dump them outta the sack). For my adult snake, I feed him in an extra 20-gallon viv I've got.

Amen! Feeding response bites from large snakes can be serious.

I feed my little ones in their tanks/tubs...
Unless they are reluctant feeders, then they get put in a deli.
Anything over 20" gets fed in a seperate container...and my Cali King gets fed in the middle of the living room floor off a plate. :eats02:

I feed my hatchlings in pint containers for chinese restaurants. You know those white paper containers. inside the viv, only problem is they get out when they don't wanna eat but once they eat they can't. Might be a good trap for a lost snake.

She is the only snake I have IN my living room...the rest all live in the basement...or my kids room.

She is our favorite...and has a TON of personality...

If I put frozen thawed mice on a plate and put her near it...she will hang out and eat until they are all gone (she is eating 3 hoppers at a shot...haven't had time to go get small adults yet!!)
Then I pick her up and put her away...(I have started using a hook to put her away...she tends to chase me after eating, like watching a cobra chase someone on a wildlife show...her feeding response is AWESOME)...She doesn't mind...and she isn't shy...and my kids love to watch...although I have learned to warn my wife before it begins so she doesn't accidentally come in and get surprised. She isn't a reptile person (YET...I'm still working on it)...but she has grudgingly acquiesced to my complete and total snake addiction. I just got 6 new ones last week...and told her the night before that they would be here the next morning and she had very VERY little reaction...which is excellent....big step in the right direction !!

I can just picture the snake coming after you! :roflmao: Your wife is like my husband, he would mess himself if he came in the room to something like that. Too funny!

It does,too..

It even surges toward my hands in the same fashion...it's nuts...

She is by far the tamest, most personable snake I own...but when it's feeding time...keep your hands and feet inside the car at all times.
