AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!

I'm getting quite annoyed, I took my snakes into the shop I bought them from for a check over and to get a definate sex for my young male (?). Anyway, I have just found out that the male (?) which was sold to me as an aney type a is actually a ghost corn. I didn't realise at first because he was very dark as a hatchling and that my female (?) which was supposedly a normal phase apparantly was supposed to be a motley amel but came out normal. Now when I look at pics I can see that the male is a ghost but my female looks like an Okeetee. When I get a digi camera I'll post pics so you guys can help! I'm going insane, I just wanted to know so that I can determine the genetics if I breed them. Plus one guy was like "oh yeah thats a male" (ghost) but the other was like no way its a female. I tried popping them (ghost seems to be male but I dont want to hurt them so Im being wimpy!) Anyway, sorry, just needed to vent some frustration!

Well, petstores honestly don't care what they sell you, as long as you buy it, so it's no big surprise that they were mislabeled be it for ignorance or malice.

To find out what sex a snake is, take it to a qualified herp vet.

Photo's can help ID the geneotype, but it's not foolproof. The only way to be certain under many circumstances is via breeding trials.

I can understand your frusteration, but there are large numbers of breeders who don't even understand the genetics of their snakes; it's probably expecting too much to think your petstore would really have a clue.

Heh heh, I had the opposite thing happen. I had a corn sold to me as a ghost motley female as a yearling...I didn't really question it until I found the hatchling pic for this snake and it was born looking anery. (...and it's a male.) He bred a ghost this year and produced anerys and ghosts het motley as well as a couple snows.

So...my ghost motley female ended up being an anery motley male het hypo and amel. Not a bad trade off, in fact I am pleased since I love his pattern and can now get multiple clutches from him each year.

If the corn is born anery-looking, but fades as it ages, chances are it's an anery genotypically...even though it looks ghost as an adult. I've heard reports that many anerys het hypo do fade out with age. I haven't raised and test-crossed enough fading anerys to say for sure, but this certainly seems to be true with my anery motley male. I know motley fades out anery in and of itself, but this guy is much more ghost-like than my ghosts.

I'd say your best bet is to breed the snake to a hypo to see if it is hypo or carries the gene.

Best of luck!

Yes breeding them will find out a lot of things. Like what they are and what they are het for. Hope that everything turns out better for you.

Hurley,
I love that ghost in the middle....its very nice looking!!!

the ghost in the middle

Thanks. He was a cutie...but unfortunately a male so he went to a new home. LOL. I kept the little girl in the upper left corner, though. :)

Darn I should of got that little guy instead.....
only if I lived in the states.....

I know for sure that if I were to live in the states I will for sure to have more than 200 snakes..(that is at least double my inventory right now)

Hey, top left....thats the colouration (so far) of my male( <--- definatley is a male, went to an experienced vet and he showed me how to pop and probe!!) But with almost identical markings as the one in the middle!

Yes petstores arent exactly my fav place to buy corns... BUT I MUST SAY that I did get a really good deal from my local petstore... the owner who breeds his own corns... bought some babie corns that looked like Sunglows... I bought 2 babies a Male and another Male (which actually turned out to be a female) and I bought each of the corns for $20 In all actuallity they were Amel Bloodreds... I SOME AMEL BLOODREDS FOR $20!!! I sold (gave) one to Darin Chappell (sorry if I spelled that wrong)... So yes Its hard to know what to get from petstores... but of course if you know what your looking for then you can find some really really good deals out there!

Not at my pet store...

You can't get a good deal on any corn snakes at my local pet store. They sell normals for $60! Of course, they probably wouldn't recognize a bloodred when they saw one, so a bloodred would be $60, too, which isn't so terrible. I think they sell amels there for $70.
