I'm from NJ and I'm new to snakes, I don't know what kinda snake to get :shrugs: I have a 55g all glass fish tank, it measures 48x21x13

I was maybe thinking a Ball Python or Cornsnake. Think those are good first timer snakes? I've read up on both of them, corns seem a little easier, balls seem to be finky eaters...

Do you know what to do with a dad who's afraid of snakes? (my dad is scared of them) Any little tricks to un scared him?

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Corns and Ball Pythons are both good starter snakes, but like you said - Balls can be picky eaters. Corns and balls both tolerate handling well and are generally good tempered. Corns are more active, exploring around your hands etc, whereas a Ball Python would be happier just wrapped around your arm or neck. You could quite easily house your corn snake in a tank that size for its entire life but you would need to make sure there are lots and lots of hides for it as a hatchling as a space that big can be daunting to young snakes.
I'm a bit biased, but i would go for a corn ;)

To get your Dad less afraid of snakes, first tell him they are not slimy, they are more leathery! You could try going to your local reptile store and let him handle a few small snakes to see just how harmless they are. Or, you could reassure him by saying its going to be kept in its own, locked tank and wont be slithering around the place, you will take care of it and he wont ever have to see it if he doesn't want to :)

Welcome to the site!!!!!!!! There are a lot of great people here. Everybody is always willing to help.
Be sure to read the FAQ section in the forums. They answer a lot of questions. There is a search feature that answers many questions.

I have one of each. Corns are easier to take care off.

As for your dad, once he holds a corn, he might change his opinion. I was scared of snakes until I held my corn. Now she crawls all over me.

Corns are great! One thing to remember is that NJ does not allow you to keep normal looking corns because they are protected. You are allowed to keep amels (albinos), snows, blizzards, and lavenders. There is a thread on this forum that discusses it in more detail, if you want to read more.

Good luck!
