Wheat bran for snakes?

cornsnakekid92

trouser snake
i just got some lizards and i got a 50 pound bag of wheat bran, i like it and it seems that it would be fine for snakes, do any of you guys know anything wrong with it?, it is cheap too a bag that is about equal to 4-6 cubic feet of aspen is only 6.99, even thought it is poultry feed that is what i call a deal!

I've never used wheat bran for snakes but I would be careful. Some people put thier reptiles on corn cob pellets and if ingested it swells inside and caused problems. I'm not saying the wheat bran would do that but I would probably stick to more proven substrates for your snakes.

Shouldn't this be in the husbandry section? :shrugs:

Welcome to the forum. Cornsnake kid.
But sorry I don't know anything about the wheat bran poultry feed for corn snakes. :grin01:

wow i am sorry, i was use to the husbandary being at the top, the new members section has only been here for a few months so i forgot sorry!:bang:

I have used it for mealworms before...

but never snakes. I am all for trying new things - carefully. It might get moldy when wet - don't know. A snake probably would not ingest enough to be a problem as long as you don't feed on the substrate. At least it is not hard and angular like corncobs.

If you are new to corns, you might want to try the "tried and true" (such as aspen) first. Then try some careful experiments once you have some experience and know what possible problems to watch for.

i have had corns for almost a year and a half and have tried 3 other substraites, i like aspen the best! but Wheat bran would be less then half the price!

How dusty is the stuff, Chris? I dunno anyway... I'll bet it molds quickly, and I'll bet you end up using more of it than you would aspen. Use old newspapers if you really want to go el-cheapo. :grin01:

it really isn't too dusty, and it still looks pretty cool, i guess i will wait until school is out to try it because i have half a bag of aspen and then i could watch it more closely.
