sorry, for all the recent posts...
I got a momma mouse about to pop and she is real big so i want to continue her line. Anyways, when will a male mouse try to mate with a young female? will they wait until the females are at least weaned? Thanks again.
 
Males can be sexually mature as young as 5 weeks old. Females take a couple extra weeks, it is ideal to wait for them to get to 10-12 weeks before they have their first litter.
 
Thanks! So will my male try to mate with them before they reach 6 weeks? should i take them out right after they are weaned or could i wait a little while?
 
I leave mine all together and I find that the young females usually don't have their first litter until they are 3 months old. If you have the space you can seperate them until they are full grown.
 
EXCEPT!!........

Sometimes when you separate them to grow, when you put them back there could be some female fighting!! I actually had to cull one female because she killed every new mouse put into her colony, even another adult female breeder!!
 
Hubby wanted to add (he saw the thread title "when will males try") His answer was "when they're breathing!!)
 
Haha! that's great! lol so if i take one female baby and grow her up and then put her back with her mom the mom might fight her? What if i put them all together in a new container, clean the ten gallon tank and then put them all in the ten together?
 
I found that adding a female to an already established colony can cause fighting between the females. Not always, but you need to be ready for it. I just added a mamma back with 3 of her female babies with no problems. A month ago I added a female back to the same colony and one of my females killed her. (the killer female is dead now and have not had additional problems in that colony)
