Where to feed?

Many people suggest not feeding your snake in the viv, but taking it out and feeding it somewhere else. Where might this be? Does it have to be another enclosure or can it just be anywhere besides in the viv?

SEARCH!! This topic has been brought up many times.. And don't post the same question in diffrent sections! :twohammer

It's best to do it in another container if you're going to feed outside of the viv. That way, the snake starts to identify the container with food, and knows that as soon as the lid opens, food is coming. Then you can put the corn back in the cage without touching it after it eats. I know that if I put my hands near mine right after a meal he'll give me the CHOMP.

Was this necessary? You are not forum police so no need to get after people. If you don't like the questions, I would suggest you practice abstinence from posting a response. Contrary to how some posts end up, We actually do strive to be a friendly and welcoming type forum.

i feed my corn snakes in deli cups and i feed my ball python in a clean 5 gallon bucket. My BP knows what the bucket means she knows that when she can see it she gets food and you better not but her in there and then not feed her cause she has a tendency to strike at your hand when your picking her up out of the bucket cause she thinks your giving her food. So like checkerbelly said just use one container and your snake will know in time that that container means food time.

I know this is a nice and friendly forum... or else he would of got flamed a long time ago... But come on ... the guy posted the same question in 2 diffrent sections at the same time!! If everyone thought like you, we wouldn't even need a FAQ section or a SEARCH at the top of the forum...

Alright everybody... lets listen to the "Forum Police" and keep on posting questions that have been answered millions of times already and remember to post one in every diffrent sections!!! Lets see what this forum will turn in to...
:shrugs:

Thanks to most of you for your comments. I did search as well and got even more varied answers, but definately have decided to feed outside of the viv

Why have a forum at all then?

Just because answers are out there, doesn't mean the topic never has to be brought up again.

Getting sick eh? Yo do know why people are telling you to search right? :uzi: Do what you guys want... I was just trying to make a point, that I'm pretty sure alot of members with agree with... I don't have time to sit around and argue with you kids...

You can feed in the viv if you have the following:
1. No substrate. Substrate can be ingested with the food and cause impaction. Paper towel, newspaper, or reptile carpet are fine (although there are people who said they've had a snake ingest paper towel).
2. You don't just open the cage to feed. This will train a feed response. As long as you handle your snake regularly (except for the 2 day wait after feeding) and change water, clean, etc. there should be no problem with it. I've been bitten frequently by snakes that are fed exclusively in a seperate container, and never by the baby hatchlings that I feed in their containers.

One benefit to feeding outside the enclosure is that you can get a good visual look at your snake before feeding, you can spot clean while they are downing the mouse and change the water too.

give it up...

Just keep going, change the page, change the site, pet your snake...anything just stop complaining. As a new member, I appreciate all the different responses. If you are bored, find something else to entertain you. :)

:-offtopic to 581775017.......Search Dis! I'm am new to these forums too and am always learning.. You may be a veteran of the "Boards" and know how to navigate them others aren't and it's easier to start a new thread. So chill and relax..
As for the orig post... I feed mine outside also, so they know they
are getting fed when put in the "other" container..

nhaislip - I'm glad you were able to find the information you needed. MegF. gave an excellent answer as well. Aside from the occasional outburst, this forum is an excellent source of information and friends.

:-offtopic 581775017 - Calm Down! Informing newbies of the various functions available on this forum, as well as the appropriate posting "rules" and behavior preferred here is all well and good. However, as one of the older members, I am going to inform a newbie (join date of Oct '06 and 35 posts = newbie) that his attitude and manner of treatment of another newbie was not very nice.

Your rep is on the way!!

As for the original question, I too feed my hatchling outside of his "normal" cage. I use the deli cup he arrived in for now, and once he is a bit larger, I will be using a small "critter keeper" instead. I have found that my little guy has a bit of ADD and if I try and feed him in his "big" tank, he loses focus quickly. In the deli cup, the only thing he can really interact with is the mouse. He has not yet missed a feeding in his cup! Good luck!
