Which Snake?

Hey, I live in Georgia and I just found out after I spent a while reading up on corn snakes that they are illegal here. I'm a very sad and had my heart set on a corn. Since I can't own a corn what are some other snakes that make good pets? Also, if you know any loopholes to get a corn or maybe some discreet shipping? Let me know.

List of snakes that are illegal here:
  • Brown Snake
  • Corn Snake
  • Crayfish Snake (Glossy, Striped)
  • Crowned Snake (Southeastern, Central Florida)
  • Earth Snake (Rough, Smooth)
  • Garter Snake
  • Hognose Snake (Eastern, Southern)
  • Indigo Snake
  • Kingsnake (Black, Eastern, Mole, Scarlet)
  • Milksnake
  • Mud Snake
  • Pine Snake (Florida, Northern)
  • Pine Woods Snake
  • Queen Snake
  • Rainbow Snake
  • Rat Snake (Black, Gray, Yellow)
  • Redbellied Snake
  • Ribbon Snake
  • Ringneck Snake
  • Rough Green Snake
  • Scarlet Snake
  • Water Snake (Banded, Brown, Florida Green, Northern, Redbelly)
  • Worm Snake

It might be better giving us a list of snake that are legal in Georgia.
Which I think isn't any. But you have to think on how you plan on feeding your pet too. And a Vet also.

I have a vet that my sister in law uses for her reptiles and there are plenty of places around here to get anything from pinkies to full adults.

What about a nice California kingsnake? Florida kings are great too, IF they are legal in GA. I'm not sure they are. Rosy boas are sweet!

The problem with sneaking and getting a snake that is prohibited is there are circumstances in which it might be discovered. What if you have to take your snake to the vet? (This happened to a friend of mine who moved to GA with sugar gliders, one of which became ill and required veterinary attention).

So I would just choose one of MANY other species of snake that are just as nice as corns.

I think I'll try to get this little guy if he's still available. He's for sale around here. :)

If you want something like a corn, you can think hybrid like a jungle corn or a creamsicle. I also think the variable king snake is just beautiful.

WOW! Remind me never to move to GA... 3 of my top 5 favorite snakes are on that list!

Anyway, it sounds like there's still a few... Limited... options. The list doesn't say anything about Emory's rat snakes, which are relatively similar to corns. Depending on how you feel about boas/pythons, it sounds like all of them are legal. As has been mentioned, there's a couple king snakes that may fit the bill... It doesn't say anything about bull and gopher snakes, either.

That snake is beautiful. What is he? Good luck getting it! :)

Theres also Sand Boa's. I just recently got one and got to interact with several others before finally deciding on him. They were all the sweetest snakes I have ever held, very calm. And they dont get very big either.

I've been looking at those snakes too... He's got some pretty ones at a good price, I'm just sure about corns and kings in the same room.

Luckily I'm in AL, though i'm 7 mins away from the state line Lol

Brooks kings are great!! But they get a little bigger than corns, and can get pushy at feeding time. I love them.

Like everything that moves could be food. Anything you do might mean you're about to feed the snake! Just don't feed in the viv, and get the snake out before you handle mice.

They give great neck massages when they get older!

haha, okay. Are the as docile as corns? I guess not if "anything might be food". I guess with any snake regular handling will get him more used to being picked up. How long should I handling him a day to get him well adjusted to handling?

Also, I wanted to use the Munson plan but since he's not a corn I was wondering if I would have to adjust his feeding schedule?

How about an Emory Rat Snake? You didn't mention them under Rat Snakes that were illegal and they are basically a corn that just doesn't get as big. I have a couple and they are great pets!

It's tough. I can get the king as soon as I want or I could wait for Repticon in October and see what's there, but then I take the risk that their might not be anything within my price range or that I like there and I miss out on two opportunities and have to nose out something somewhere else...
