White-sided Black Rat

Susan

Go Ahead, Make My Day!
I picked Freddie up at Daytona in 2008. He had good length but was on the thin side for his age (I'm guessing he's an '07). I'm doing my best to fatten him up but seems to always grow more in length and his width doesn't want to catch up as quickly. He'll get there eventually, I guess.

I've just started getting into these as a species.....Great little snakes that are a real alternative to corns IMO....
Susan, how lively is yours compared to the average corn?
Ours are on the go, non stop.... I just wondered if this is the norm for them..

Since I have the number of corns that I do, I see the whole range of personalities, but I would have to say that Freddie is fairly typical in activity as my corns. He is getting a little food aggressive lately and has been acting like my aggressive Cali king, biting and constricting the weighing bag, but that is a new behavior for him and I'm thinking it's related to the season. I think he knows it's winter (temps in the snake room are still warm, but can get cooler than normal at night) and instinctively wants to bulk up.

its not likely, but with an aggressive feeding plan it's very possible to get one that size in 2 yrs.

As for personality...they are a little bit diff from corns. All the ones I've encountered tend to move around and be a bit more aggressive than corns...atleast as far as feeding goes. They can be great snakes to have though, and I've dealt with a bunch that are sweet as any cornsnake when handled.

And they are also known as licorice rat snakes.
