You should further explain that you are talking about a heat bulb that is housed INSIDE the viv, not above it on screening as many do.

Well since this is a snake board...and the topic was in the snake husbandry forum I'd have to venture a guess and say it's about snakes.

We use ceramics, and we use guarders.
And we use guardes on all our lighting ( as theres electricity involved)
can't never be too careful. Herps can be quite brain dead when it comes to technology. Thick gits LOL

I'll go out on a limp and say some sort of under tank heater, whether it be flexiwat or a standard UTH. Check out the what kind of heating device do you use to get a feel for what the rest of us do.

Bulbs do get hot and can burn the snake, especially younger snakes. Rarely do people pu the bulb in the tank it can lead to burns.

We use heat lamps just for food digestion and during the summer because the tanks are near the AC vent. We have no where else to put them at this time. Gaia has an UTH and a night light; Queenie has a heat lamp that points to her hid but the lamp is on the outside of a 35 gal corner tank and Smokey has a right night light-heat lamp over his hid but that is resting on the top of the screen of his 55 gal tank.

i don not use heat bulbs. i use UVA and UVB bulbs. they are aparently better for the snakes skin. that what i heared anyways. :)

Some basic facts

In regards to snakes only....

For all of you using bulbs and nightlights...these are not necessary unless it is your only form of heat possible or is necessary due to a room being too cold. However I have never seen a UTH that could not get up to 85 degrees no matter if the room was 60, so overall I dont think a bulb is needed unless for some reason you cant use a UTH . If you have a UTH you don't need a heat light too.

Heat bulbs are certainly not safe for any reptile if the bulb is inside the cage without a protective covering. Its just senseless to me to be honest. Would you put a hot bulb within reach of a small curious child???

Snakes would be much happier if you dont have a light on at nights, and they have no need whatsoever for a UVA or UVB Bulb. Many reptiles need the sun rays but snakes don't and they like the dark.

Many people prefer under the Tank heaters because snakes do well with belly heat when it comes to thermoregulating to digest their foods.

Where there is a will there is a way. There are certainly ways to safely provide a heat source for your animals. Maybe its not the most convenient way for human, but we should put the animals health first.

Best wishes to you all

I have to agree with Dawnrenee - I'm afraid you've heard wrong.

UV is vital for some reptiles to metabolise calcium and prevent bone disorders. However, Corns are not one of those reptiles.

Some people do use UV with Corns, but it definitely isn't necessary - my 19 year old has been raised without and seems fit enough.

UV certainly has nothing to do with the condition of a Corn's skin, that I've ever heard about. You might need to revisit the source of that information and make sure they haven't told you anything else that could be wrong.

Sometimes there is a lot of misinformation given by pet shops who want to make a sale. Where the green iguana needs 12 hours of UVA-UVB light, corn snakes do not. I read where feeding them chicks are good for their scales and for shedding.

I just started with an UTH for Gaia's tank and had to use a regulation along with positioning the tank (mesh and plastic tubing) up on ceramic tiles about 2-3 inches so the hot area will stay at 82-86 otherwise the UTH will shoot up to 120+ in a flash and the regulator is on the lowest setting but still had to elevate the tank because the temp went to 100.

Sometimes it's best to get a good book like Kathy Love's manual instead of listening to salespeople in a store.
