Howdy!
Normally I wouldn't buy a snake from a big chain store, but I found a super cute (female, I think) blue-eyed ghost corn (labeled as just "cornsnake") at Petsmart. I went into another Petsmart (who have just recently started selling snakes as well) and saw another one. These definitely look like pale ghosts, not anery's, and I was just wondering how they got there. I thought it was strange is all. They even look "silver queen"-like. Very pretty.
 
That's not uncommon, I got the most spectacular looking blue eye'd female ghost quite awhile back from a PetCo.

Course she belongs to Trevor now... I'm still waiting on seeing a new picture of her... :rolleyes: :twoguns:
 
They have lots of snows and amels (at least at petco) and Petsmart doesn't sell snakes (yet)

I know the suppliers vary depending on where you live (east cost vs. west coast) and you can actually find all differnent assortments of snakes. We picked up a hypo male that we suspect might be het blood and an awsome aztec male from PetCo.

The only thing I'd watch for is mites and dehydration. (Both are curable, the first just takes persistance.)

My little girl is healthy, thank goodness. She had just gotten there that day (or the day before and put out that day). The Petco's around here have been selling snakes for a while, but the Petsmarts just started selling snakes. I just thought it odd that she wasn't a normal, amel, anery, or snow.

They have quite a large selection of corns where I live. At petstores here in Calgary (namely Petcetera), I've seen normals, amels, various mots, anery A's, charcoals, ghosts, bloods, pewters, lavs, and a GORGEOUS yearling sunglow motley!!! :bang: I guess you can just get lucky sometimes. :shrugs:

The petco I go to is probably one of the best pet stores Ive seen in a while. Every single animal there looks healthy and great. The cages are always clean and the people are helpful and knowledgeable. Hell, last night I went in to pick up some stuff and noticed they had two new rosy boas for sale. The girl didnt really care for snakes but she asked me if I knew what I was doing, I said yes so she let me hold the snake. The boa was healthy, quite strong and active. They even clean out the tarantula's cages regularly. I hear people bash on them all the time but compared to every other small store Ive been to, at least Petco takes care of their animals. this may be a localized phenomenon but Im glad there is Petco. I got my snake there 2 months ago and she is growing like a wildfire!

The one by me is the same, clean, well cared for animals, infact ALL of them "should" be that way as it is PetCo policy to do an hourly animal walk where all animals are checked on and anything looking ill goes to the back... :shrugs: I dont know why all PetCo's aren't pristine, they should be based on cooperate expectations... certianly there are many stores out there that should be under investigation by their higher ups...
 
they were stopped from stocking reptiles about 3/4 years ago in the uk due to the bad conditions and lack of knowlegde of the staff.. they sell equipment still.

The Petco closest to me gets their snakes from The Gourmet Rodent. I have not found the animals to be well taken care of in this store although the last time I was in there ti did seem better.

The Petsmart told me they get there snake from Lasco (?spelling). They have some beautiful California Kings, one of which has not sold for quite a few months because she musks everyone! Today I was in there buying crickets and they had an amel, hypo (I think), and a ghost! I was quite surprised at the selection. They were also very well priced at $40. They stayed at the store though! (I was good!)

My experience with petco has been both good/bad. My boyfriend got a classic there who is a good feeder and is in exellent health. A few weeks later he picked up a little amel that is nothing but problems. He looked great when we got him, so we didnt think any thing bad was going to happen. He has only eaten twice since he got him in October and is losing weight. Now he seems to just be wasting away despite my efforts to keep weight on him. :(

From now on I'm sticking to breeders. I bought an Amber from Serpent Pets at the last KC reptile expo, and he's an awesome snake and a good feeder. Cheaper than PetCo, too, if only by $5... but he's got a feeding/shedding record and a registration application so I'm not complaining there.
 
I just posted my petco story under another thread, but I'll paraphrase here.
MITES! And four little amels looking very uncomfortable.
Luckily the 800 number for complaints in right on the glass, and the guy on the phone said he'd send a Vet out and alert the general manager.
I will be checking back, but I did get the feeling they were very sincere-

The manager on duty didn't seem to care, but then again if she did, they would never have been on display in that condition.

But yeah, I'm quite sure it really varies store to store. You only need a manager who knows what he's doing to make the difference.
 
I was at petco the other day, and I almost went off on the lady. They had the cage marked corn, and than we go ask if we could see the snake, and they are rude as could be about it. The guys was a jerk, and tried to say that they thought it was a rat-snake not a corn, but i finnally got the lady to show me. She opened the cage, and grabbed this wood hook kind of thing(it was pretty sharp) and starts flipping through all of the aspen. The corn was very young, and she litterally flipped it over three times, before i finnally was yelling at her to stop, and that i could see it. I think is was an okatee though, and wish i had the money to buy it.
 
I got my snake, Kane, today at Petsmart. While I will say that the employee who assisted me could stand to learn a few more things about snakes (luckily I did extensive research before I went), the snake seems to be doing great. I even got him out and handled him for about 20 minutes. He was so great! He is the first snake I ever owned and he is truly stealing my heart already.
