Why did it take me this long?

Hello. Name is Michelle. Mom of four, three boys and girl all under seven. I've had birds, fish, cats, dogs, a leopard gecko and now a corn snake. That's not counting the salamanders and frogs that have kept us company for a couple days at a time over the summer. My eldest son shares my love of animals and inspired me to get our leopard gecko two years ago after our first salamander 'pet' was released back to the wild. Dash was my first introduction to the world of reptiles and I have been fascinated since. After upgrading his tank and redoing it completely, we have one very spoiled and content leopard gecko.

My son has been obsessed with snakes since a very young age, reading everything he could about them. We always told him that he would have to wait until he was older, but I reconsidered as I learned more about them. For the last year, I have scanned ads and gone to reptile shows, not realizing that I was looking for a snake that would suit our family. Two weeks ago, I found an ad for a snake that completely caught my attention. After texting with the owner and meeting the snake, we decided 'she' would be coming home with us. Pancake is a three year old, four foot long butter corn snake. She seems to be adjusting well - peeking out from her hide, mellow when being handled. We haven't handled her much as she adjusts to our house, but when we have she has been very calm. We'll be trying our first feeding on Monday. She's currently eating live, but I'm hoping she'll start accepting F/T after I have an idea of how she eats. I'll probably have a lot of questions as we go along. I'm happy to have found such an informative group of people to help us as we learn about the ins and outs of life with a snake. Nice to meetcha!

Welcome to the forum =)
I'm probably the only one up this late as I work midnights and I constantly stalk the forum for photos lol.
Would love to see a picture of your new addition.
They are very addicting- the second I held my very first baby corn, I immediately wanted another, and bought a second one a couple months later- it's a miracle ( and and may be partly due to my very smart boyfriend keeping me under control ) that I don't have more.

There are a lot of different posts on here pertaining to some questions you may have, they're worth the read- you'll find a lot of informative and very smart people on here who are both helpful and knowledgeable. =)

Welcome to the forum zakdat! And congratulations on your new addition, she sounds like a real sweetheart. My girl was on live when I got her as well, it took a little bit to switch her over, but it can be done. We're here to help when you have questions or concerns, and we're suckers for cute snake pictures :)

Hello zakdat! How ya been? Better late than never, no?

I actually used to just lurk around here until almost a whole year before I began to participate. I've discovered that participation here can increase your knowledge base by leaps & bounds! Besides, once you begin to participate, you get to know who knows what and how to read between the lines. For the most part, this site is populated by mostly caring, thoughtful, & knowledgeable individuals, with a few crackpots, like myself, to keep things interesting!!

:welcome:

Welcome :wavey:. Looks like Axis snagged the nifty new welcome emoticon first, lol!

I have a butter motley, which is simply put the same color, different pattern. I love butters!

I too am looking forward to a picture when you get the chancel. Glad to have you here and hope you will make this forum an online home!

Hi and welcome Michelle! Yes, as Zeina said, you'll find
very smart people on here who are both helpful and knowledgeable
And then you'll find me! I'm sure you'll also find a few minutes to look around here. Enjoy!

Thanks. I really lucked out finding her. She had only one owner previously and that owner put a lot of time and effort into training her and making sure her setup was right. The owner started university and has two jobs so wanted to find Pancake a home that would have more time for her. To help her settle in and get used to us, my eldest son has been sitting a couple of feet away from the tank and reading out loud to Pancake in the evening. Pancake pokes her head just out of the hide to watch him. We've only held her a couple of times but she seems really calm. I understand that her owner did socialize her extensively so that has probably helped her transition. Monday is our first feed day, so I hope it goes well.
