wild corn - a complete surprise

I am not sure where to post this, but the wierdest thing just happened. Hubby and I stayed up late (we are night owls anyway) to do some cleaning before my sons birthday party tomorrow. Hubby was sweeping a room and came across a cornsnake. He called for me, assuming that it was one of mine. I thought it looked a little different when I picked it up, but it took a closer examination to leave me a bit confused about this snake. Even though it did not look familiar to me, I have been feeding snakes tonight so I assumed I must not have properly secured a container. It is about the size of some of my smaller 2004 babies, so I combed the snake rack looking for an escapee. I don't have many "normal" corns and many of them look distinctly different in color from this one. Also, this snake has a distinctive "shattered glass" pattern around the middle of its back (I do have some zigzag and aztec corns - but they have more ziggy markings than this one.) I have NO escapees, and this snake does not look like any of my snakes. It is friendly enough though - it did not resist being picked up any more than my own corns would have. I have NEVER found a wild cornsnake in my home (plenty of yellow ratsnakes get in - but so far no corns.) As far as I know, no neighbors in my immediate area have pet snakes, and I live out in the country so neighbors are few and far between. I guess this guy is a little confused about his natural environment, lol. I just thought I would share the excitement of catching this natural beauty. I will try to get some pics tomorrow if I have the time, but it might be sunday before I have time.

You actually find wild snakes in your house on a regular basis? How are they getting in your house? Maybe I'm just so used to the burbs , but I have a hard time understanding this. The biggest animal to sneak in my house was probably a bee.

sort of

that depends on what you mean by "regular basis" though. I have lived in florida all my life, and I have been breeding fancy mice as well as other small pets (off and on) since 1989. I have been battling yellow ratsnakes ever since, lol. They always manage to find a way in - maybe someone left a window open and there was a small tear in the screen. Maybe the front door was left open too long. Maybe there is a hole behind an appliance somewhere that snakes find their way into, who knows. It does not matter where I live in FL, I think the snakes are attracted to my mice.... but I hear of other people evicting snakes from their home and they don't have rodents as pets. My mother in-law about lost it when she found what sounds like a black racer in her kitchen. Where there's a will, there's a snake, lol.

Anyway, I caught about 4 yellow ratsnakes in my past residence. I have lived at my current residence since March and have already found 5 yellow rats (so far, they have all been discovered in the laundry room/mouse room, but the corn we just caught was in my sons bedroom.) Where I live now, we are pretty much out in the sticks (that is what we were looking for when we moved.)

But if you think all the snakes are odd to find in your house, try finding a bat in your apartment (in the city.) Hubby and I lived in a 1 bedroom apartment when we got married. One night, just after turning off the lights, I saw something fluttering out of the corner of my eye. It was just a shadow in the dark of our room. It was enough to prompt us to turn the light on though - and there was a nice black bat flying back and forth across our room. Apparently, the thing managed to find his way in but could not find a way back out. We had to open the rear sliding glass doors and wait for the bat to find his way out. LOL.

We also used to find lizards and tree frogs that managed to get inside occasionally (that has not happened where we are now, but it used to happen fairly frequently.)

lucky, i wish tht i had snakes just come in my house!. the only yhing i get it like spiders, and most of the time they are too fast to catch

here is a pic

I just fed the little guy and he ate without hesitation (hence, the little belly bulge.)

just for reference

that pic is a little dark - his background color is a little more grey, and his orange tones are not quite as orange IRL. I tried adjusting the pic, but when I get the greys to look truer and the orange toned down a bit, the whole pic looks washed out.

Hrm...I'm confused as well. I was going to mention maybe eastern milk before you posted the picture...but now I'm not so sure. It looks corn by the coloring...but I haven't really seen that head pattern in corns. Kinda cool, maybe someone with a little more herp ID skills will pop on here and set us straight.

Where in Florida do you live?? I live in the Panhandle in Panama City but am currently going to school at UWF in Pensacola... That snake looks exactly like the corn I caught a few months back at school that I kept... same colors and almost exact same pattern.... But what I'm wondering is where do you find yellow ratsnakes?? I have always thought they were very pretty and I would like to catch one as a pet, but I have never seen one outside of a petstore.... kinda dissapointing... Anway, I'm just wondering where you find them at...

Actually... now that I have scrolled my window back over to the left, I see that it shows where your from... lol. Gainsville.... I have friends that live there and a few friends that are going to school there.... to bad the ppl I know that live there are here in Pensacola and the ones that are going to school there are girls and would be to scared of snakes to get one for me... lol.

I live in the gainesville area. I have lived in this general vicinity for the last 14 years, and this is where I have seen/caught most of the yellow ratsnakes that have plagued me ever since I started breeding mice and other critters. I used to have a dove aviary and I had an even bigger problem with yellow ratsnakes then, lol. I had a few yellow rats that I considered keeping, but I always end up releasing them or occasionally giving them away to people I know. I still have the corn, however, and I will probably keep him because he is friendly (the reason that I have NOT kept any of the yellow ratsnakes is because they have been just the opposite.) I caught a baby snake many years ago, not knowing exactly what kind of ratsnake it was and the thing bit me uncountable times. I took it to a local reptile shop to find out what it was, and of course the mouth was a yellow rat, lol (I had never seen a baby yellow rat, and did not know how different the hatchling markings could be - I had hoped it was just an odd looking corn.)

Oh, and I just saw that you posted a new message as I was about to send this one, and *I* am a girl, lol. I have always liked snakes, and I know many "girls" who like snakes. (I also know a lot of guys who are terrified of snakes.) You just gotta know the right people. ;) )

I wasn't implying anything.... I know I was stereotyping a little, but stereotypes are usually somewhat true... I wasn't saying that just because someone is a girl they're scared of snakes. My friends though are the typical "see a snake and scream at the top of your lungs" girls... lol. ô¿ô

Very cool little find there Charlene. So do you think you'll keep it? Might be nice to add a little "wild" blood to Kismet :)

thanks jynx

I probably will keep this little one, "he" (I've not tried to sex it yet) is not only cute, but very friendly (if he was not, that would be the "deal breaker" lol.) Anyway, I can only keep a limited # of snakes (or I would drive hubby even more nuts) so nothing is ever a certainty, but I will certainly try to hang onto this one. I would like to see how he turns out as a yearly before deciding for sure - I am thinking he might be a nice addition to my miami phase striped motley project (his background is much greyer than this pic indicates, and the "orange" on his neck is not nearly that vibrant.) I guess I need to practice with lighting and my camera to get the greys to come out truer - even my best miami came out "brown" in pics.... :shrugs:

hi, im from south Marion county (Pedro/ Summerfield) and i used to find Red rat snakes all the time in the field. I used to try to keep them as pets when i was younger but i wasn't allowed ot keep them inside and they always escaped.. lol. Anyway i just bought a corn that looks a lot like the one in the picture, was sold to me as a Red Corn Snake.
