Winter

Corn snakes don't need UVB rays like other reptiles do (iguanas for example).

I personally use both a UTH and a heat lamp. The UTH is for the "warm" side, and the heat lamp is mounted about 12 inches above the top of the tank and pointed towards the "cool" side. I do this because my cool side without it is about 63F (I keep my snakes in the basement). It also helps control the humidity level in the summer time, but I have to give a humid hide for shedding during the winter.

My snake is in my bedroom. I think the cool side is going to be ok w/out the lamp. In the winter, they put the heat on so high that sometimes people have to open the windows to get cooled off! And this high heat dries out the air in the tank, so I was misting the crap out of it - I was thankful his shed was all in one piece!

Since his shed, he's had a personality change. He's kind of timid and yesterday when I went to feed him, he "ran" to the corner and coiled in a strike position. I put my hand in the tank and he relaxed a little, flicking his tongue. But when I tried to pick him up, he dove into the bedding. I thought maybe he wasn't hungry, so I picked up the pinky and dangled it above where he was hiding. Sure enough, very sloooooooowly his little head popped up and he followed the pinky higher and higher, so I figured he wanted it.

I picked him up and he started to thrash a little and donked himself against the glass. He NEVER reacted ever in this way!

I picked him up the rest of the way and placed him on my arm...........totally relaxed him! He was fine!! He just hung out, flicking my shirt with his tongue. I put him in the feeder box-thing and he climbed off my hand and went right for the mouse. His tail was still wrapped around one of my fingers!!! I thought, "Don't move!" I remained still as he ate the mouse and worked it down. He eventually let go of my finger and I took the box over to the tank and he crawled out and hid in his little house.

Very, very strange reaction. He shed one week ago today. That was his first shed since I got him. I think maybe I should handle him more. I work two jobs right now, just for some extra cash, and maybe the lack of handling freaked him out. Before the shed, I handled him the same amount and he was always mellow. The times I fed him after his shed, he was a little different, but not much. This was a really strange reaction!

How'd I get on this subject??

Jason
