Wont use his hide!

My snake never seems to use his hide unless I put his head right in front of it. Then he goes in, but 5 minutes later, he's out of it again. This concerns me because when he starts to shed, he wont stay in his humid hide. Is this normal?

And the other thing is that he is always off the ground. I have some plasctic leaves in the corner of my viv and he is almost always curled up on them. When I took the leaves away, he managed to curl up between the lid and the corner. I dont know why he never goes on the ground. He is always so cold in the morning because he is away from the heat source.

I do not think it is a problem if he does not use his hide. He is probably just more comfortable in the leaves.
I can not help much with the heat. My corn does not seem to like to go near the heat source either. She is cold when I pick her up. I could use help here too.

Welcome King21. A corn snake should be cool when you first pull it from the viv. Their preferred body temps are usually in the low 80s. With your body temp at about 98.6*, they're always going to feel a bit chilly to you. Doesn't sound like you have anything to worry about from the behavior you described. As long as the snake has access to a low 80s warm side and a low 70s cool side, he'll do what he has to do. I try to regulate humidity in the enclosures; I don't use humid hides. Your snake would probably use it if it needed to. :)

As far as feeling cold. Your body temp is around 98.6. Your snake is the same temp as its surroundings between 70 and 85 degrees most likely. Its allways going to feel colder to you because it is colder than you are. I wouldnt worry about it not hanging out on the heated side, but it wouldnt hurt to check the temps on that side to make sure it is just not too hot. If its at the right temp your snake will go over there when it feels it needs to.

As far as the hide goes i wouldnt worry either. Your snake will hide wherever it feels most secure. Its normal for them to wedge between the lid and top of the tank. As far as a humid hide itll go in it when it feels it needs to as well. Humidity isnt a great concern for corns unless you just keep getting bad sheds.

Hope this helps.

Do you have a regular dry hide also? I don't use a humid, their water bowls are big enough for soaking. What substrate are you using?

I do have a reagular dry hide on the other side of the viv. I have never seen mine soaking in the water bowl yet, but i have only had mine for a week now. I use Aspen.

My corn never soaks, he just leans over the edge of his bowl and takes a drink. My friend's snake stays in the bowl most of the time. I guess they just behave differently. I also have a lot of silk leaves and he stays in them or curled up top ander the lid. I haven't seen him in any of his hides in weeks. He loves to climb and the leaves must just be a more natural hiding place. I'm new at this and snake behavior is fascinating.

yea, so it must just be personal preferance for the snake. they all must have different personalities.

Your friend should recheck the viv temps. A corn shouldn't be soaking in a water bowl constantly. Perhaps at shed or once in a while, but the fact that it's in there all the time says either too high a temp or mites. For what it's worth, my little one likes to hide in the silk leaves rather than use the hide and even some of my adults would rather curl up behind the hide rather than in it. I wouldn't worry at all.
