Wood Baking question

Just before you say: "did you search?", I did but I have a question I didnt find. I purchased a log at the pet store, should I still bake it? It really isnt possible to wash it and leave it out to dry here as it is winter. So i was just wondering if I should bake it still. I have seen 10 minutes at 300 degrees. Anybody have any ideas or opinions to this.

That is if I can get it in the oven, it is pretty long.

Ok, I just checked the size and it is about 4 inches too long and stops the door from closing completely. But maybe I could do one half and flip it and do the other. The only thing would be that the door isnt closed all the way.

whoa...
even it if it did fit, i never suggest over 200*F
resins in the wood can boil out and stank up the house and ruin the wood at temperatures higher than that...

ask me how i know ;)

I'm guessing you over-baked some wood and it stank up your house lol
PssdJay, could you cut it in half and make 2 hides -just a thought

Thats just what I found when I searched. I still havent done anything yet.

It isnt really a hide, it is grapevine, so more for climbing. I also bought one of those flexable vines to wrap aout it and add more to it. I suppose I could cut it but that would be such a shame cause it is such a great piece of wood.

Just dawned on me. Ill go take a picture and post it so you can see. Ill probably try the shower method. Im not really worried about bugs cause it is from a store, I just want to make sure.
So as you can see it is almost as long as my stair and I think it would be a shame to cut it.

So I took it into the shower with a water/bleach mixture. I cant wait for it to dry and I can finally add it into her viv. I think it is whats missing and it will finally be complete!! That is until I find something else I cant live with out...

If its the same petstore you posted the rant about it was probably a good idea to clean the piece of wood, that place sounded awful. :puke01:

Sorry for the confusion CSkid, I can never get the quote thing right
PssdffJay was the one who ranted about a petstore
I guess all of us have at one time or another though lol

MAN!! Just thinking about that store brings up some suppressed rage!! :grin01:

I wasn't expecting big bugs or anything, but when I did wash it,the water was pretty black!

I fed yesterday so I just waiting until i can put it in.

I guess we all have times that we need to rant about a pet store experience. Just baffles me how they get away with that. :headbang: :headbang:

I wash everything, even if it's sealed in plastic. I've worked in warehouses where stock sits for long periods of time and you never know how much dust may settle on something before it's shipped or packaged. Wood especially has to be cleaned whether it's in a clean store or not as that is the perfect hiding place for any kind of bug, or it has sat on the shelf for a long time collecting dust and being handled by who knows how many people before you bought it. I think the more expensive the piece the longer it sits.... stores aren't going to pull pieces off the shelf and clean them but they usually clean the shelves and those chemicals could be harmful if not rinsed off as well... FYI
