Yellow Rat Snakes

I know this is a forum for corn snakes... but we have just aquired a breeding pair of Yellow Rat Snakes - the female of which is very likely gravid - and we were wondering if anyone had any knowledge in this area! we're new to the world of breeding, we fell in love with the snakes when we saw them, and were looking for a breeding pair to help with my wife-to-be's depression, get her out of bed in the morning...lol.. we found out the snakes had ated about 2-3 weeks ago so we were wondering if anyone knows the time span to shedding/laying? if it's the same as corns or slightly different? she hasn't shed yet but we put a laying box in with her, which she was straight into and hasn't come out yet! any advice would be much appreciated.. we're pretty sure she's gravid as she is very large around the body and feels lumpy...

Cornsnakes and ratsnakes are virtually identical when it comes to caring for them. I would look on this site and do a little research right away. A gravid female ready to drop is not the optimum time to start doing research, but if you go to search function and the FAQ's section it will probably have everything you need to know. The male and female are in seperate enclosures correct? Gravid females usually lay within 10-14 days of prelay shed. do you have a container of perlite or vermiculite to place the eggs in and a warm place to keep it until they hatch?

We have containers and both perlite and vermiculite, I have been told to make a simple incubator out of one of those foam boxes they send frozen stuff in.. so have a spare heatmat and a spare thermostat i was planning on using for that, hopefully Emily will bring back a suitable box today so i can get that made and set up..
We have been doing a lot of research and asking lots of questions but your right, wasn't the most thought out purchase in the world..
Ive ordered a couple of books on corn snakes that have stuff about breeding in them as well because i was told they are very similar but they haven't arrived yet..
cheers,
Owen

You don't need much more than the styrofoam box and a place that has a stable temp of around 80 or so. I'm incubating all mine in the snake room in a styrofoam box like you have with no additional heat. No worries about heat spikes that are more likely to kill the eggs. Lost my girl's second clutch that way. Hatched out 6 clutches in just the box on top of my stereo. Worked fine. It may take a little longer if you incubate at a lower temp, but they usually do fine.

luckily she hasn't shed yet so we have a little time, she has a laying box and she's settled herself there, I think just to get used to it and cos it's warm and cosy! mind you, it's going well so far and we've got a lot of good advice from different people so fingers crossed all will go well!
