Yesterdays News

Gintha

*stretches* I'm out!
I remember reading somewhere in the forums that the cat litter "Yesterdays News" is alright to use for substrate. I picked some up yesterday to try it, but just wanna make sure its okie, I did a search for it and all that turned up was stuff about mice.

I've never heard of anyone using cat litter as a substrate for snakes. Most people tend to use things like eco-earth or repti-bark for natural looking substrates or something like aspen or even just paper towels for non-natural looking substrates. Personally I wouldn't use cat litter - seems to me it would be like sand in the aspect of irritation plus you never know what the chemicals in cat litter could do to a snake. Just my .02

Katie, just as a point of correction/information, "Yesterday's News" is a litter made of "pelletized" newspaper pulp (thus the product name). Think of it as taking "Carefresh" litter and making it into pellets, much as aspen pellets are made.

My only concern would be any added fragrances. I know that they also make two other "Yesterday's News" products, each specifically marketed to rabbits and ferrets. I'd read over the "ingredients list" to see if any of them contained perfumes/fragrances.

Gintha, any particular reason why you've opted for this? Just curious.

jazz

Thanks for the info! In that case I'd go with what jazz said and watch for fragrances. How good would it be for burrowing? I know my corns love to burrow in the aspen I have them on. I guess it's just personal preference then...ok, I'm done now.

I use the unscented formula. I opted for it cause its $2.99 a bag and repti bark is $34.99 for the same size bag.. plus I can get yesterdays news in town and have to drive for 2 hours for reptibark.

Its light weight and Treasure loves to burrow in it.. its also not dusty at all hehe.

I've used Yesterdays News (aka Crown royal animal bedding-this is cheaper yet) for years with almost all my caged or litter trained animals and have no complaints. it is clean, smells great, handsome to look at and made out of paper printed with 100% vegetable dyes.

i doubt youll find any problems with this as a substrate

and on the note of Crown Royal Animal Bedding...its still cheaper than yesterdays news...and its specifically made for substrate with the intent of an animal spending all of its time on it so its made healthier yet. and again made of 100% vegetable dye printed newspapers

Warning on YN litter...

Hi All,

A quick Google of Yesterday's News litter turned up this very interesting bit from a rabbit owner. Looks quite dangerous for a snake. DO NOT just look at her pictures, read the article. Quite interesinting, including the information obtained from the manufacturer, Purina. Also note the info is current as of March 2005.

Good Luck.

Ok...well if your concerned and not wanting to use Yesterdays News now...I do suggest crown royal animal bedding

i used it for years and never had any reason to complain. I ran a legitimate rattery and sold individual rats for as much as 50 dollars a pop (depending on the color and genetics) I would have never used a product that would harm my animals in such a manner so i watched the bedding very carefully. For a scent free, aesthetically pleasing and SAFE substrate, i suggest Crown Royal Animal Bedding

Never heard of crown royal animal bedding... so likely not something I can get in my province ~.~

I think that that woman is full of it. I've used Yesterday's News litter while working at the vets office for the last 10 years and have NEVER seen anything like that in it.. not even once. And the vets office used it for around 40 cats a day every day for those 10 years. Its used post-op as its not dusty or clumping like traditional cat litters ad even when dirty its still more sterile then clay based litters. Only odd thing I found in Treasure's Yesterdays News was a coupon for 2 free bags =P

Mind iff'n I ask what size bag and where you get it..??

I recently took in a lop rabbit for a friend who's moving for a new job and doesn't think he has the time that the bunny deserves to take care of it. He recommended "Yesterdays News" and, along with the bunny food and supplies, brought along a half-bag for me to use.

Two days ago, I had to go out to buy another bag cuz what he left was used up.. I was expecting pricing comparable to cat litter..

:blowhead:

$20.99 fer a 30+ lb. bag
$12.99 fer a 13+ lb. bag
$6.99 fer a (I think) 6+ lb. bag...

I would *love* to find *any* size bag of this product fer $2.99.

Specially now that it seems it'd be a decent substrate fer m'new 'corn..heh.. :)
