Your favourite substrate?

Wood mites are harmless and are actually a benefit to the enclosure.

I like aspen too, but right now we're using all paper towel. I just noticed a MASSIVE infestation of wood mites in the few tubs that have aspen in them. Since it's breeding season everybody has paper towel except for the youngins and those are the ones with the wood mites.

It's actually kind of crazy how quickly they appeared and they also caused me to have a completely COLOSSAL freakout that they were snake mite babies.

Needless to say I've had to spend a great deal of time changing out the tubs with aspen.

I don't care if they are a benefit to the enclosure, I just don't want little tiny buggies running around, it gives me the jeepers creepers!

But as an aside, how exactly do they benefit the enclosure? Do they feed on the waste? I found them to be more heavily infested in the tubs that had a bit of excess moisture from spilled water dishes or fresh poops.
