zoo med rheostat problems

i bought the repti-temp rheostat from zoo med to control my uth on my 10 gallon, but i just clicked it on from the off position and i cant get the temp to lower it just keep going higher, i have a digital thermometer with a probe on the glass and the temps were getting up to 99 degrees has anyone else had these problems, please someone help

Definately sounds like something is wrong with the rheostat. The lowest power setting (the lowest non-off setting) should still be essentially off. Do you have another to test it against? If it is the rheostat, and it almost certainly is, there is no fixing it. Toss it and get another.

Yeah, it's the rheostat. I hope you have proof of purchase. Take it back to the store and exchange it. If you have the same setup upstairs, you know that this is *not* normal for that particular rheostat.

should i buy the more expensive one or should i try getting another one of these same ones? :shrugs:

You said you have the same type of rheostat in another Viv, right? If the other one is working for you, the one that's malfunctioning may have just been cruddy. So it's really up to you. If you're interested in getting something a little more precise (but also probably higher priced), you might want to search "thermostat brand" or something similar. I know there are a lot of threads on what types are best as far as price and being dependable.

I've seen a lot of posts here about people having trouble with the ZooMed rheostats not going cool enough. Plus they're a bit expensive compared to a lamp dimmer from WalMart for $9 that works as well or better for just 1 UTH.

Of course there's also the ZooMed 500R *thermostat* that many have had good results with for only 19.99 plus shipping.

I would just take it back get your money and make your own its cheaper and its not hard at all. I made one and never had any problems. Theres a link somewhere you can find the directions. Maybe this will help. :)

Don't feel special, I have the same piece of crap one you have paid 20 for it and my temp is around 90 usually if not hotter. Luckily I have an assload of substrate and she never goes underneath it so I am not too worried. I do have to make my own rheostat soon though, just been too sick and tired. It isnt that particular one like these other people said, its just this stat period that sucks.
