Something that has happened (not hypothetical)

I can hardly blame Pruddock for ignoring the above statement. Does one have to be black and oppressed to have the capacity to understand the meaning?
Yes, and that's why I reiterate the views of those I know who do have the capacity to understand the meaning. If you've never been reduced to a word, how do you know how it feels?..How it causes you to feel trapped in the warped vision of how the majority sees you..As being less than everyone around you, to the point where over centuries it's adapted into your own language and culture. I find it ironic the word is only challenged once it gains another meaning, as though it should only possess one meaning; of racial hatred. Maybe it's just me, but I easily distinguish the love and hate within the word (biggest sign being that it either ends in "er" or "a", which is obvious!)..Not saying it's always used appropriately, or even that it shouldn't in time be replaced..Just saying I understand it..

As a 22 year old living in New Hampshire, please try to explain (given my limited capacity for understanding) your current oppression?
lol...I've seen my share, and it's beneath me to explain them in an effort to validate my struggles..I'd find this laughable if it wasn't so demeaning, yet it's not on me to explain myself. People are more oppressed than me, and are owed defending..My history makes me understand that, and that's really all that matters..

BTW: Tyflier is basically right on point here...Loving it!.

From people you know, really? Or maybe just Tupac lyrics?
Wow, that's extremely foolish!..Maybe for you it's impossible to capitulate, but I actually have black family members. My aunt grew up in rural NH in the 70's when racial tension was awful; white parents telling their kids she can't come over, or being outcast from dating because of the stigmas that exist...Bold suggestion here, but I urge to you to use your brain before you say something like that again, or maybe even listen to Tupac yourself..Otherwise you might end up saying something like that to the wrong person!.

All I was trying to do when I analogized "retard" with the "n word" is that black friends have told me the "n word" when used as a racial epithet by someone who is not black was severely painful to them (my black friends), and I wanted to make the point that some people who are or who love a developmentally delayed person might feel severe emotional pain too. I realize that racial epithets have centuries of hatred behind them, and as a Caucasion I wouldn't know ~emotionally~ how it feels to hear one directed at me, but I can believe my friends that it hurt terribly. I guess using that analogy has made several people really upset, and truly, that wasn't my intention. I just remembered the pain in my black friends' voices, and the pain in the voice of a person I know whose child is developmentally delayed, and the pain sounded similar to my ear.

The thing is saying a bill in congress is f#*ing retarded and saying someone's kid is a f#*king retard is completely different. The two are in no way the same or hold the same meaning- this thread is so pointless people....:(

Ricky you have done this before. It's a poor tactic to say nobody can feel my pain. If you haven't walked in my shoes you don't know how it feels. That's just self pity. And do keep in mind that your aunt was black, you haven't walked in your shoes either.

So you're saying yes, one has to be black to understand the meaning of oppression?

So....it's ONLY the N word that brings about this feeling of a "trapped and warped vision?" So the word "faggot, queer, dyke, lesbo, cracker, raisin, 'tard, 'Mo, 'coon, chink, junglebunny, aspie, wetback, etc. etc." those words are so much less inflammitory than the N word? Because the blacks are the only ones who have been oppressed to the point that anyone else lacking increased melanin in their skin couldn't possibly understand how it feels to be stereotyped?? Color me confused.

Ok, so you come here and accuse us of being of limited intellectual capacity, and when asked for clarification, it's suddenly beneath you?

YOUR history? Please, tell us all about YOUR 22 year history!! I'm all cracker ears!

As a dues paying member of my local BSU, allow me to say... chill out. No one was directing the word at anyone, they used it as a comparison. Just as Mike started this thread to stir the pot, you're perpetuating this argument to stir the pot.

Lori, you forgot wap, jap, fudge packer, carpet muncher, spic, porch monkey, honkey, and gook. I think I remembered to insult all minorities but if I forgot one let me know I wasn't trying to be a bigot or anything:)

I was about to say the same thing. You Go Girl!

Wow...Just when I think your a decent human being..Consider me fooled!. She asked a question; I responded..Sure on your high (possibly drunk) horse things look different, but that wouldn't be the first time I assure you!.

Again, another example of a limited capacity...Reeling off racist slurs as a defense for not being racist seems foolish to me, but then again...Me being 22 has zero to do with it, if not made evident by the non-wisdom shown be long-time members...None of your points have validation in any form, and clearly what I said is applicable to all derogatory terms (which you seem to know them all)...Ironic, because this is a thread that's based on outrage towards someone for using poor language..Go figure!!.

I’m a fat old guy. I feel kind of discriminated against in that we don’t even have a derogatory term to describe fat old guys. That’s not right.

Gee Ricky that's pretty harsh. Beyond the fact that you think I may be drinking, which I am not, you didn't say anything. Maybe if you weren't high you would make more sense.

Your comment stated that nobody could understand how it feels to be called the N word unless they were an N. I took exception to that fact. Where is my high horse, how did I loose my decency? I disagreed with you. Is that my undoing?

Than you should be proud that people haven't reduced fat old guys into one group, and can see past those traits immediately and see you as an individual; correct?.

So now you're not only saying we have limited mental capacity to understand a word, but now we're also racists? Wow.

Hey Ricky...ever heard of Sylvan Learning Center? They do wonders with people who have poor reading comprehension. Let us know if you need a referral.

Discussing/Arguing/Debating anything with ricky/tyfler/michael is exactly like Einstein's definition of insanity.

They're just words, of course, but sparky gets you a three day ban while pretty much everything else flies willy nilly. No problem.

Wade, some people think that their opinion on a matter is the only one in the world that is right. You offered a counter argument, as did Lorri, that Ricky did not like and thought that it was worth basically calling you two names.... So, Ricky then immediately called both of you names in many words that were trying to hide it. (not sure if that all made sense...)

Honestly I don't like the whole "You don't know, because my race has gone through it and yours hasn't" argument. It is (in my opinion) used by those who don't want to even think about what other people have gone through in this country...
Why my ancestors were Irish. Which means that they were treated like garbage when we came over here.. Do you know how much that actually affects the way I feel when someone starts saying something about Irish people being drunkards or whatever else people can think about them? Honestly, I don't feel a darn thing. Maybe that means I'm crazy, or maybe that means that I have grown out of the feeling that everything people say is a slight on me.

It doesn't matter if the word has a "r" or an "a" on the end of it. If a white man can't say it, then a black man shouldn't say it either. IMHO

Whatever...I retract said statement and will try and explain better. It's not so vain where it's as though "nobody can feel my pain"..It's just that when you make claims as to why a word creates a 'double-standard' you have to look at who's point of view it comes from..Is this black perspective, or is this white perspective?...Is it neither, and more cultural perspective?. Clearly people see the 'n' word as having one meaning, and if it's used by a black person than a white person has equal right to speak it..I despise that notion, because the word has been recycled into something totally different, though that information may have never reached your particular culture, you follow?..Over time the word became used as endearment, like your acknowledging the greatness of someone else sharing your struggle..Sort of like how war veterans take pride in their own individual platoons. You shared a struggle that no one else can understand, so you associate closest with those who are the same and of the same group..The 'n' word is a fellowship among some people where they can relate to one another, to the point where they can take pride in outlasting a word that once was so painful...Like sand that turns to pearls, the 'n' word became a sentiment to the changing of times into something positive and the word in turn now represents that.
