Um, it's 3 hours because having a kidney stone is not more important than say, my 88 year old great grandfather coming in with a 12 hour long heart attack and therefore it doesn't take priority. If your argument is that ERs should be on a first come, first serve priority, go ahead and try to implement that and enjoy all the deaths on hospital property because nurses and surgeons were too busy stitching up someone's nasty spill to pay attention to the people having strokes and heart failure.
It costs $4500 at the ER because, as stated in this thread already, they will treat you whether you have insurance/are a legal citizen or not (I know some of you find it ridiculous that the ILLEGALS be allowed to have car accident wounds and broken bones treated when clearly we should be asking for an ID and a birth certificate at the door of the ER, and anyone who isn't a PURE 'MERKAN CITIZEN should be left to die outside) and that has to be payed for somehow, by someone. It's not a fair system but neither is the "give us money before we help you get that bullet out of your stomache" system. I have to wonder how many of you have actually needed serious medical help that you think we shouldn't have national health care. The bill itself may need editing (as they all do) but A: it's just a rough draft to get it out there so they can do the reconciliation and B: it won't go into effect for 5 years. If cars are required to have insurance, why aren't people?
