I was wondering if anyone here from New York, New Jersy, or Connecticute does any field herping. Ive been in New York now for about 4 years and I havent had a chance to do any herping. If anyone knows any good spots or if someone doesnt mind me tagging along it woulkd be great. I wanna try for a few weekends this summer or maybe a friday if Im off of work. I dont mind driving an hour or so .... Thanks

I've just recently pondered doing the same thing I could suggest Bear Mountain or another park but I haven't been. There are quiet a few parks you could try to google I will probably try going in the woods surrounding my house if I ever get a chance. Good luck
 
First off I'd get in touch with Vinman. He does some conservation work/invasive species catching up in the Bronx, Pelham Bay area I believe.

Also, I'm not sure where in New York you're at but you might wanna try the Hudson Valley. My GF's parents live in Garrison, NY, about an hour north of Manhattan, and she's caught black rats and garters, and photgraphed timber rattlers and cotton mouths close up. She is hard core! She's got a whole collection of big snake skins she's found on hikes around there.

Also, I work at a summer camp in Sussex County, NJ up in the North Western part of the state and I've seen timbers and garters there without trying to find them. This summer I plan to take some of the older kids herping with proper equipment and stuff.

Yep I still do some conversation work but most of what we started has been finished. There are a bunch of native herps that have been re established.

I can find eastern garters, eastern milks, spring peepers, wood frogs, gray tree frogs within a 2 mile radius of where I live.

BTW cotton mouths are not found north of Virginia on the east cost.

That's really cool! I wanna do herping like that.
Actually, I also thought that cotton mouths weren't found up here, but it turns out that there is a very small population in the Hudson Valley, and maybe elsewhere. My GF's brother used to work at an animal education institution further up the Hudson with lots of different native species (not venomous ones) and he verified that there are some cottonmouths. Anyway, there are copperheads up here which are just as cool to see.
 
Wow you got topost some pics. If it is true it has to get documented and put on a range map . It also might be a new Ssp. or a introduced population. Only a DNA test will tell what they are . Please post some pics I'm so intrigued
 
Yeah, absolutely. I'll ask my GF about the photo. Apparently cottonmouts were quite abundant in the area years ago so it might be a tiny remnant population.
 
If the weather is nice I may go out next weekend. I havent decided where but Ill have all week to plan it out. Theres a park here in the area called saxon woods park I belive its in WHite Plains. I might try there.
