Ultramel Motley x Ultramel Motley

Jay@PJCReptiles

"Quality Before Quantity"
Hi Everyone,
This is another clutch that just got done pipping and I thought I would share a few pictures. They are pretty hard to distinguish from one another but I think I can differentiate the subtle differences between an Ultra Motley and an Ultramel Motley. Thanks for looking and I hope you like.

Jay

Hi Amanda,
Ultra is co-dominant to Amel. Meaning that when you mix Ultra and Amel they will automatically combine to make an Ultramel. If you breed a Ultra to an Amel the outcome of the clutch will consist of all Ultramel. As much as I hate the term "Co-dom", because for the most part it is used incorrectly. Usually it is used to describe what I prefer to call a "broken gene". Meaning you need to breed it to the same mutation so it will combine to make the "true complete" recessive so you can achieve a "super" mutation. This is typical with Motley and Hypo in Boas and Pastel, Spider and Mojave in Ball Pythons. Ultra is one of the genes where "co-dom" is the best descriptive of said gene. Meaning it will automatically combine with another single recessive that will produce a whole clutch of the target morph (Amel and Ultra are co-dominant to one another). However, If an Ultra is bred to an animal that is not het or homo for Amel then the babies produced would be het for Ultra unless it is bred to another het or homo Ultra and in that case you would produce Ultra in the clutch. Also, if there are similar traits involved you could get combinations with Ultra based animals.......

Ultra het Caramel x Normal het Ultra, Caramel

3/8 Normal
3/8 Ultra
1/8 Caramel
1/8 Ultra Caramel

If an Ultra and an Amel are carrying similar heterozygous or homozygous traits and are bred together you will get combinations of those mutations as well but they will all be Ultramel based morphs..........

Ultra het Caramel, Motley x Amel Motley het Caramel

3/8 Ultramel
3/8 Ultramel Motley
1/8 Goldust
(Ultramel Caramel)
1/8 Goldust Motley

If you did this breeding with animals that were homozygous for similar traits you will get a better ratio of mixed mutations in the clutch.
Now the fun starts when you breed two homozygous Ultramel to one another. In this instance the genes will separate again........

Ultramel x Ultramel

1/4 Amel
1/4 Ultra
1/2 Ultramel

If there is a similar trait involved in this pairing you would make even more combinations as the het or homozygous traits will combine with the genes in the breakdown of the Ultramel combination.........

Ultramel het Caramel x Goldust (Ultramel Caramel)

1/8 Amel
1/8 Ultra
1/8 Butter
1/8 Ultra Caramel
1/4 Ultramel
1/4 Goldust
(Ultramel caramel)

The real hard part is trying to destinguish the difference between a lot of the combinations when Ultra and Ultramel are in play. One of the best markers to use in seperating them is the eyes. Ultramel based morphs tend to have ruby pupils while Ultra will usually have a dark pupil. This is not a guarentee but a good tool to put to use.
I know reading this might be a little confusing. It was a little confusing to put it into words so you might be able to understand what I am trying to describe...lol. It might be easier if I show you when you are here. I do a better job showing you then I do trying to explain verbally. I hope this helps. Does this make sense? :shrugs:

No...I don't like them.... I think you need to send them to me, so I can hide those ugly little worms ;)

You can have the dark ones, I will hide the lighter ones lol. Precious, MY Precious! LOL

Ok-it's a deal :)

It's nice to know you guys are deciding how to divi up my snakes. :grin01:
I am glad you like them. After they have shed and had a couple of meals they will be for sale and you guys can get one, or a couple for that matter. ;)

Jay, I can't believe I missed this on the 28th.
Not only are they beautiful, but what an 'academically' perfect clutch to learn from.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I am glad you liked them.
