Mice not breeding

So we had our mice since June. its been 2 months. 1 male to 4 females. but the male is smaller than the females.. and they are siblings only 1 female is an outsider. And they are not breeding. how long before the colony becomes extablished? m i panicing too soon?

I have 1 male to 6 females and the male will not stop breeding..lol i think hes enjoying it a little tooo much lol...I had another male but he just would not breed any of the females so he got tossed out.The males imo i think have to be very dominate over the females kind of like cats.the female will put a hurtin on the males if there not careful. As far as age , my 1 male started basically when he got his testies lol well where you could see them anyhow. Not sure the age thou. The one male mouse as bred with 6 females and now i am haveing to build more cages because i didnt think it was going to be as sucessful. So what i would do it get another male (*if the one you have is old enough and just isnt doing anything) and try him out.Hopefully you will get babies soon!Oh and btw when u do get a new male or even if the old male starts producing leave the male in the cage 24/7 never remove him unless your get overran by mice..never stick more than 1 male to females.Always becareful with your females b/c you could get a (hot) female which will kill all your other females. If you have a hot female remover her immediatly , either by herself with a male or just feed her off.I hope this helps and sorry its soo long!good luck

oh and it dosent matter if they are sibilings..my 1 male has bred his mom np..and dont worry about incest.....its totally ok with mice

I keep my mice in my snake room it stays just room temp about 75ish degrees sometimes hotter depending on the outside temp.keep plenty of food and water for them :)

the temp in my country is about 30 degrees.. the perfect temp for snakes without using a UTH.

but i dun understand what is going wrong. i now have 3 cages.

all are from different sources. but none of them is breeding... starting to pull my hair out.

you might need to start up a new colony. might be an issue with the male. or did you do this already? (i see you said you have 3 cages)

Mice won't breed in temps over 85 F not sure how that translates in to C temps. Over 90 F and they die. You said your male is smaller, have his testes dropped? If you can not tell the male at a glance he is too young to breed just yet. Or he may be a pansy and is afraid of the girls I have had males like that lol. My current male is a bully though. He killed on female and beats up the other regularly. She does look like she is pregnant though. :shrugs:

I have nt change the male. Mice in my country is super hard to get!!! Ppl either sell the babies or dun sell at all!! The female in this cage are big already. I can't be using a smaller male on them!! The male will get bitten right?

I also suspect there is something wrong with the male..

85f is 29c.. That's impossible.. Wow.. That's too cool already. Room temp is around 32.. Maybe tts why they dun breed? Means got to put them in my air con room!!

I think it is more of an issue with the male being a dud. My mice have continued to produce all throughout the summer, even during a very prolonged heat wave. I'd start a new colony.

Comocox, I assume you keep your mice climate controlled? They DIE at and over 90 and do NOT produce in temps over 85 F. Unless you have miracle mice that I need to import to the US? I have found mice will produce up to 83 degrees F, but not beyond 85. Come on, the males go sterile in high temps as they can not cool their semen to fertilize the eggs in the females. Also males under 12 weeks have low fertility to begin with so if the OPs male is small he is probably at or under 12 weeks. Thus no mice babies, I say patience is needed. As well as big production in the winter to stock up for when the temps go up again.

Audrey, I do not understand when you say that 85 degrees is too cool, you mean like cold right? Here in the US 85 is quite HOT for animal production. Even rabbits won't breed in temps over 85 F and die over 90. So I am completely confused here.

Hmm.. I used the tempreture converter.. It said that 85f is 29 degrees.. That's like in an air con room turned to the warmest. Have u been to Asia? Our outside tempreture can easily hit 40 degrees on a hot day. So in wondering is there something I'm missing.. I checked with my friends, those that have mice breeding put their mice in a normal temp room.. So I'm confused.

I have over 20 colonies and they produce just fine up to 90 degrees. I don't keep mine in air conditioning and it doesn't bother them in the least. :shrugs:

The only thing that I have noticed that affects mice breeding, besides age and health is light. My mice are in a room that doesn't have a big window. They don't get much in the way of natural light. I usually have to use artificial lighting methods. ie keeping the lights on during the day.

Start a new coloney..

Regards.. Tim of T and J

Best answer! When they aren't producing, I generally start over with a younger colony. Any ratio of 1-4 or 1-5 is good.

Agreed. My mice are in the main TV room of my house with me so that they can get as much natural light as possible - only draw back to them being in the main room is that I have to keep them totally clean at all times so that they don't smell, I do complete bedding changes every 3 days, with the exception of the baby nests.

No, I don't keep my mice temperature controlled. But, as Wayne mentioned, I do keep the light to a minimum. Our temperatures had exceeded 90 degrees for almost 2 weeks and I didn't experience any mortality in my colonies, AND, my mice kept producing.
I also don't get my mice from pet stores to set up my breeding colonies. My mice come from a professional breeder. I establish my colonies with mice that are 5 weeks old, and they usually start breeding at 8 weeks.
